Research Associate in Evolutionary Origins of MicroRNAs

The University of Bristol is seeking to appoint a Research Associate to contribute to an innovative research project focused on the evolutionary origins of microRNAs. This position is based within a leading academic research environment and offers the opportunity to work on cutting‑edge questions in molecular evolution, genomics, and RNA biology.

The successful candidate will work as part of a collaborative research team investigating how microRNAs originated and evolved across different species. The role involves conducting advanced computational and/or experimental analyses, contributing to the development of new research methodologies, and interpreting complex biological datasets. The postholder will be expected to actively contribute to the design and execution of research activities, prepare high-quality publications, and present findings at scientific meetings and conferences.

The role also includes collaboration with interdisciplinary researchers, maintaining accurate research records, and contributing to the wider academic community through seminars and knowledge exchange. This is a fixed‑term research position aligned with project funding and provides access to state‑of‑the‑art facilities and a vibrant research culture.


Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant discipline such as molecular biology, evolutionary biology, bioinformatics, genomics, or a closely related field, or be close to completion of their doctorate. Candidates should demonstrate a strong academic track record, including publications or evidence of high‑quality research output.


Required Expertise / Skills

Candidates should have experience in areas relevant to the project, such as bioinformatics, computational biology, RNA biology, or evolutionary genomics. Proficiency in programming or data analysis tools (Python, R, or similar) is highly desirable. Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills are essential, along with the ability to manage complex datasets. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required, as well as the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary research team. Experience in publishing scientific work and presenting at conferences will be advantageous.


Salary Details

£37,099 – £44,263 per annum
