Uttlesford District Council is seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Principal Ecologist to play a leading role in delivering our strengthened biodiversity duty and shaping sustainable growth across the district. This is an exciting opportunity to join a multidisciplinary service spanning planning, design, conservation, economic development and climate change, where biodiversity is embedded at the heart of decision-making. You will help drive the Council’s strategic commitment to conserving and enhancing biodiversity and contributing to the delivery of our ambitious five-year action plan to 2030, ensuring measurable improvements for habitats and species across Uttlesford.
As a senior specialist, you will provide expert ecological advice across policy, strategy and development management, supporting the effective implementation of mandatory biodiversity net gain and the Council’s wider nature recovery ambitions. Working collaboratively across disciplines and with partners, you will champion innovative, place-based solutions that strengthen ecological networks, respond to climate change, and align with regional initiatives such as the Essex Local Nature Recovery Strategy. This role offers a unique opportunity to influence how growth is planned and delivered, ensuring that development leaves the natural environment in a measurably better state and supports the long-term resilience of Uttlesford’s landscapes and communities.
