Applied research undertaken by the Animal Science Program seeks to understand the factors and processes that are critical for the conservation of Western Australia's rich and unique native fauna.

We currently have an opportunity for a Senior Technical Officer to join our team.

Under general direction of the Principal Research Scientist, this position provides a high level of technical support for fauna genetic research in the Animal Science Program, including undertaking molecular genetic analyses, management and analysis of genetic datasets and preparation of scientific reports and publications. The position manages and oversees fauna genetic research activities in the Sid James Conservation Genetics Lab, including management of DBCA fauna specimen collections and databases, supervision and training of students and staff in molecular genetic techniques and provision of high-level technical advice to the broader Animal Science Program and department.

Selection Criteria

Applicants should address the following five (5) criteria. These should be addressed in no more than four (4) pages in total.

1. Substantial experience in molecular genetic techniques and analysis methods for fauna genetic research and monitoring, ideally working across a range of sample types, including noninvasively collected samples.

2. Demonstrated ability to develop, optimise and troubleshoot molecular genetic protocols for fauna genetic research.

3. Demonstrated ability to curate and manage large specimen collections, databases and genetic datasets.

4. Demonstrated capacity to schedule and manage workloads to ensure timely delivery of projects.

5. Well-developed interpersonal skills and proven ability to work independently and in research teams.
