Job Overview:
The Unit Secretary is responsible for administrative and support activities to facilitate efficient workflow in a patient unit. Responsibilities include answering, screening, and transferring calls, managing patient, visitor, and physician flow, responding to call bells, maintaining accurate medical records, and coordinating supplies and equipment to meet patient needs.
Qualifications:
Required:
* High School Degree
* 2-3 years experience in a fast-paced healthcare setting or in acute/long-term care
* Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook
* Strong customer service and communication skills
* Knowledge of medical terminology, confidentiality, HIPAA, and Patient Rights
* Successful completion of unit-specific competency test
Preferred:
* Associate's degree or technical certification
Scheduling Requirements:
* 7:00am-3:30pm shift
* Potential weekends and holidays
Essential Functions:
* Serve as office administrator, demonstrating effective communication and customer service skills
* Assist with patient admission, transfer, discharge, and documentation
* Manage incoming and outgoing calls, document messages, and escalate issues as needed
* Address patient, family, and staff inquiries courteously and promptly
* Maintain medical records, ensuring proper labeling and documentation during electronic downtime
* Organize shift information including census, bed count, and patient alerts
* Support unit meetings and communication activities
