Offer description

The post would suit a urologist who is looking for clinical experience and to develop their portfolio in a supportive environment. Prior NHS experience is essential. The department has a strong recent tradition of trust grade doctors being successful in urology ST3 national selection. More senior candidates would also be welcomed. The department has supported senior trust grade registrars through the FRCS Urol and CESR pathways. Prior NHS experience is essential.

The successful candidate will assist the department in the delivery of elective and non-elective urology including outpatient clinics, diagnostics and core urology procedures. The candidate would obtain exposure in core urology, PCNLs, robotic prostatectomy, brachytherapy, laparoscopic nephrectomy, urolift, HOLEP and flexible ureterorenoscopy and laser.

There would also be opportunities for the candidate to become involved in clinical research, quality improvement projects and audits. All registrars are also encouraged to become involved in departmental and undergraduate teaching.

The department has enhanced services for emergency urological admissions with the development of a 1 in 7 non-resident middle grade urology on-call rota and a supporting urology SHO equivalent during working hours.

Main duties of the job

* Fully participate of elective and emergency urological services
* Provide highest possible levels of patient care
* Work as an active member of the Urology team
* Actively remain clinically competent
* Work closely with Multidisciplinary teams
* Activate particulate and undertake cancer related research and projects
* Work to all Trust Policies and procedures

The urology department sits within the surgical directorate but has a separate urology on call for non-elective admission.

The department has expanded over the years to deliver a comprehensive Urological service to our community. The trust has the Da Vinci Xi system and we deliver robotic radical prostatectomy for the region. A full range of diagnostic services are provided in the recently developed Northampton Urology Centre (NUC) which is supported by a team of Urology Nurse Practitioners. There is a focus on ambulatory diagnostics. One stop clinics, local anaesthetic transperineal prostate biopsies and TULA for recurring bladder tumours have all been recently developed within the NUC. A wide range of Urological surgery is undertaken including stone surgery, upper tract laparoscopy and there is an established programme for prostate brachytherapy. The department has been introducing new procedures for bladder outflow obstruction including Urolift and HoLEP. It has been given reference centre status for bladder outflow obstructive procedures in the East Midlands. Joint meetings are held with our uro-gynaecologists for female urological conditions.

Radiotherapy and chemotherapy services are on site and there is a weekly Multidisciplinary meeting between surgeons, radiologists, pathologists and oncologists.

The urology centre has recently undergone major refurbishment and expansion which has allowed us to centralise the Urology diagnostic services in one area. Flexible cystoscopies, prostate biopsies and shock wave lithotripsy are carried out in one of the procedure rooms and there are additional rooms which allow for administration of intra-vesical chemotherapy and a range of services delivered by our Nurse Practitioner colleagues which includes an erectile dysfunction service.
