New entrants are expected to join on the minimum of the pay band. If successful, your starting salary will be £26,475.
The Probation Service offers annual pay progression through a Competency Based Framework (CBF), which can increase your pay as your competence grows. Pay bands are also increased annually in line with Civil Service Pay guidance.

No degree is required; personal qualities are more important. Experience working with people facing social or personal difficulties is beneficial. Empathy, patience, resilience, and good writing skills are essential for producing clear reports under tight deadlines.

Overview of the job
The role involves working with offenders before and after sentencing, including assessment, offender management, and report writing. You will support case management using established procedures and practice directions.
Summary
Your main responsibilities include:
* Assessing and managing risks posed by offenders to protect victims and the public.
* Providing information and advice to courts and justice agencies.
* Supervising offenders on community sentences and during/after custodial sentences.
* Working with agencies to prevent crime and meet victims’ needs.
All staff must demonstrate a commitment to equality and confidentiality, and some out-of-hours work may be required.
Responsibilities, Activities & Duties
Tasks include:
* Managing low and medium risk offenders and supporting high-risk cases.
* Contributing to risk management plans and reporting significant changes.
* Using computer systems for record-keeping.
* Referring offenders to services, conducting visits, and completing reports.
* Supporting team coverage and delivering accredited programmes.
* Conducting mandatory alcohol and drug tests and safeguarding duties.
