Job Description / Responsibilities
An exciting opportunity has arisen for Registered Nurses to join our Acute Medical Unit. Here are some reasons to apply:
* Our multidisciplinary team includes Acute Medicine Consultants, pharmacists, junior doctors and physiotherapists who treat a complex mix of emergency department patients.
* Nurses have the opportunity to work with a wide range of specialist nurses and doctors to assess, investigate, diagnose and manage patients with emergency illness.
* We are one of two designated Major Trauma centres in the Southwest, collaborating with local unit trauma units to provide specialized trauma care and rehabilitation for patients with multiple serious injuries.
* We support internal and external training for career progression.

Main duties of the job
Working Within Our Department – Main Duties
* Organise and participate in delivering high standards of evidence-based nursing care.
* Carry out required planned, direct patient care to a high standard without direct supervision, in accordance with established nursing procedures and policies.
* Contribute to health promotion for all patients by providing education, support and advice, with referrals to appropriate professionals as required.
* In the absence of senior staff, delegate and supervise appropriate work to other qualified staff, healthcare support workers and students.
* Assist in co-ordination of discharge planning in partnership with the multidisciplinary team where relevant.
* Treat all patients with courtesy, respect individual needs and maintain confidentiality at all times.
* Ensure a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, relatives, visitors and colleagues.

Person specification
Education/Training/Qualifications
* Registered Nurse with current live NMC registration
* Evidence of continuing professional development
Desirable
* Teaching and assessing qualification (998 or equivalent) or willingness to undertake after 2 years post registration
Work Experience
Essential
* Completion of training for extended ward/dept roles (e.g., IV drug administration, cannulation, venepuncture, ECGs, catheterisation, PCA, epidural training)
* Currently working in a hospital setting as a Qualified Nurse or qualifying student
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Essential
* Advanced communication skills (verbal and written) for reporting and record keeping
* Ability to work as part of a team
* Basic IT skills with willingness to develop (e.g., IHS, Acis, Email)
* Ability to organise own workload
* Time management and basic problem solving
