The Opportunity Are you a practical, hands-on individual who takes pride in maintaining a safe and high-quality environment? Can you be the proactive "eyes and ears" of a school site, ensuring that the buildings and grounds provide the perfect setting for students to learn and excel? We are seeking a reliable and hardworking Premises Assistant to join a dedicated site team in Rotherham. Known for its industrial heart, its historic Minster, and its resilient community spirit, Rotherham is a town where "getting the job done right" is a badge of honour. We are looking for an individual who isn't afraid to roll up their sleeves, tackle a diverse range of tasks, and contribute to the smooth daily operation of a large educational campus. Core Responsibilities Site Security: Taking responsibility for the opening and/or closing of the school buildings, ensuring all alarms are set, gates are locked, and the site is secure at the start and end of each day. Reactive Maintenance: Handling minor repairs across the school, including basic plumbing, joinery, painting, and glazing, ensuring any "wear and tear" is addressed quickly to maintain a professional environment. Health & Safety Compliance: Conducting regular safety checks, including fire alarm testing, water temperature monitoring (Legionella checks), and playground equipment inspections. Grounds Maintenance: Keeping the school grounds tidy and safe—this includes litter picking, clearing paths during winter weather (gritting), and assisting with the upkeep of outdoor learning spaces. Logistics & Porterage: Moving furniture and equipment to set up for school assemblies, exams, parents' evenings, and community events, often requiring heavy lifting and efficient teamwork. Contractor Liaison: Assisting the Premises Manager in supervising visiting contractors, ensuring they follow school safeguarding and safety protocols while working on-site. Why This School? Rotherham’s Community Spirit: Work in a school that is a cornerstone of the local community, where the site team is highly respected for keeping the environment safe and welcoming for families. A Varied & Active Role: Enjoy a position where no two days are the same, offering a mix of indoor and outdoor work and the satisfaction of seeing the immediate results of your efforts. Supportive Site Team: Join a collaborative team of caretakers and cleaners who work together to ensure the school remains a source of local pride. Professional Growth: Access to training in Health & Safety (IOSH), First Aid, COSHH, and pathways toward Senior Caretaker or Premises Manager roles. Candidate Profile Experience: Previous experience in a caretaking, maintenance, or trade-based role is highly desirable. Experience within a school or public-sector setting is a significant advantage. Practical Skills: A "handyman" skill set with a basic understanding of building maintenance, along with the ability to use tools and machinery safely. Reliability: A punctual and dependable nature, with the flexibility to work shifts (split shifts or early/late rotas) as required by the school’s opening hours. Physical Fitness: The role is physically demanding and involves regular walking, lifting, and working at heights (ladder work) following proper training. Character: A proactive, helpful, and friendly individual who understands the importance of safeguarding and is committed to maintaining a high-standard environment for children.
