Overview
The post holder will be a member of the Immunisation team and work alongside the Immunisation Team Leader, providing professional support and leadership to team members. The role combines managerial and clinical elements; you will provide day to day management for the immunisation team whilst supporting the delivery of the national childhood immunisation programme across the Mersey Care footprint. You will also provide expert advice to the wider 0 – 19 children’s nursing teams in addition to practice nurses, parents, carers, and children and young people about immunisations.
To take the lead on immunisation training courses, support competency building of new immunisers and to act as an expert resource for health professionals and parents. Assist with local and national immunisation campaigns including outbreaks. Responsibilities
* Operational management of the Immunisation team including personal development reviews, supervision, assist with recruitment, selection, induction and retention of staff.
* Education and clinical practice development, including providing training to Mersey Care staff and involvement in audit and policy reviews.
* Organise, smooth running and administration of nurse-led immunisation sessions across a wide variety of venues.
* Follow up of non-immunised children/defaulters; provide information, advice and update data; liaise with relevant health professionals and make referrals as required.
* Lead immunisation training courses; support competency building of new immunisers; act as an expert resource for health professionals and parents.
* Assist with local and national immunisation campaigns including outbreaks.
* Maintain and develop relationships with GPs to obtain accurate immunisation histories and support planning and record accuracy.
* Provide advice on vaccinations and a wide range of health issues including health promotion and lifestyle advice.
* Provide clinical support and training to experienced and new staff within the immunisation team and wider child health teams.
* Develop new ways of working to provide a responsive service to children, young people and families; establish and maintain effective communication with relevant agencies across health, social care and education.
* Maintain registration in line with professional requirements; clinically lead, direct, mentor and support the team with supervision.
* Demonstrate leadership, accountability for resources, and making improvements to practice through influencing, motivating and enabling others.
* Assess capacity, obtain valid informed consent and work within legal frameworks when necessary.
* Advocate for patients; maintain effective communication with patients, carers and children and young people; be a role model for team members and students.
* Contribute to policy and service development to reflect local needs; participate in the clinical team canvas and provide information on staff and patient activity to support service management.
* Support the Team Leader in practice development, service modernisation initiatives, sickness/absence monitoring and induction for new team members.
* Undertake personal development plans; act as an authorised signatory for mileage and timecards; manage own work and supervise patients within the team.
* Conduct clinical and environmental risk assessments to optimise health and safety; coordinate ordering of vaccines and equipment and ensure safe storage; liaise with GPs for immunisation histories.
* Be a resource providing professional expert advice on immunisations to peers, colleagues, GPs, parents and carers; seek further specialist advice as required.
* Offer a nurse-led immunisation service primarily under the framework of Patient Group Directions: Routine Child Immunisations, School-based immunisations, Fluenz; maintain competency in emergency treatment and ensure access to emergency equipment.
* Participate in individual and group supervision; monitor record keeping and inform the team leader of concerns; support team members to improve patient care.
* Contribute to quality improvement initiatives within clinical governance and participate in patient satisfaction reporting.
* Maintain up-to-date knowledge and competence; demonstrate critical thinking, decision-making and reflective practice; support learning and practice development for students and new staff.
* Facilitate learning in practice, coordinate student placements, and participate in clinical audits and research as required.
* The post holder may provide cover for absent colleagues and will follow all policies and procedures of the organisation.
Qualifications & Requirements
Maintains registration in line with professional requirements; clinically lead, direct, mentor and support the team; demonstrate leadership and accountability in the use and management of resources; ensure consent and communication with patients and families who may have communication difficulties.
