MEDICAL RETINA FELLOWSHIP
Applications are invited for the MR fellowships in Ophthalmology based at the John Radcliffe Hospital Oxford, from February 2026 for 12 months in the first instance. Candidates should be post CCT or equivalent and wish to specialise in MEDICAL RETINA.
This post is suitable for doctors who have completed their training but seek experience in medical retina prior to obtaining a consultant appointment. It is not an approved training post. Eligibility and arrangements
* Applicants should be post CCT or equivalent and wish to specialise in MEDICAL RETINA.
* This post is not an approved training post.
* Suitably qualified job-share candidates will be considered.
* Applications are invited for individuals unable to work full-time; where appointed, job content may be modified in consultation with consultant supervisors.
Responsibilities and opportunities
* Research: the Oxford Eye Hospital has an active research portfolio; participation through writing up clinical studies and case reports is encouraged.
* Clinical work: fellows are part of the cataract surgical team and have access to cataract surgery only during weekend lists (no weekday theatre allocation within this fellowship).
* Teaching: opportunity to be involved in trainee and medical student teaching on a formal and informal basis.
* Exposure: broad exposure across medical retina; the fellowship provides bespoke exposure to the subspecialty with a small contribution to support the emergency eye department and on-call commitments.
* Service: provision for general ophthalmic needs of the local population and tertiary/quaternary referral for complex disease.

Location: John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford; Fellowship start: February 2026; duration: 12 months (in the first instance).

For international applicants, Oxford Eye Hospital is one of the few eye units in the UK approved by the General Medical Council (GMC) to provide direct sponsorship for fast-track visa applications.
