Job summary

We are a small team of 3 responsible for maintaining the SQL farm for King’s College Hospital (KCH) as well as the EPIC Cogito data warehouse for Guy’s and St Thomas Hospital (GSTT) utilised by the individual Business Intelligence teams.

This is an opportunity for an experienced SQL database administrator with prior clustering experience to join our team, become EPIC Cogito accredited and support our SQL farm and Cogito estate.

The role will require working across sites based in both Denmark Hill and Waterloo and also requires some occasional out‑of‑hours working to support overnight SQL ETL processes as well as some late night Cogito software deployments.


Main duties of the job

* To maintain the Microsoft SQL Database Farm
* To support the EPIC Cogito databases and infrastructure and provide support to Caboodle business intelligence developers via code migrations, ETL support and deployment of EPIC upgrades.
* To troubleshoot ETL issues and Cogito platform issues when required.
* Act as a training resource for developers, EPIC, and other Secure Data System support roles.
* Provide 3rd line support for Database Farm technical issues.
* Help define system requirements for new developments in conjunction with clinicians, clinical analysts and project managers.
* Provide expert advice to other Trust system managers and the Trust in relation to procurement of high‑cost data systems.
* Develop software which is needed to support and complement the Trust’s databases.
* Provide expert technical documentation to support systems and system development.
* Demonstrate software solutions to other technical and clinical staff.
* Act as a technical liaison person for third‑party suppliers.
* Implement ICT policies and propose changes to improve service.
* When out‑of‑hours support is required for the SQL farm or Cogito platform, the post-holder would be required to do overtime/on‑call and to escalates serious problems to senior members of the team.


Job responsibilities

* Manage the MS SQL Database Farm which houses over 100 clinically important databases and any associated systems.
* To support the EPIC Cogito databases and infrastructure and provide support to Caboodle business intelligence developers via code migrations, ETL support and deployment of EPIC upgrades.
* To troubleshoot ETL issues and Cogito platform issues when required.
* Act as a training resource for developers, EPIC, and other Secure Data System support roles.
* Provide 3rd line support for Database Farm technical issues.
* Help define system requirements for new developments in conjunction with clinicians, clinical analysts and project managers.
* Provide expert advice to other Trust system managers and the Trust in relation to procurement of high‑cost data systems.
* Analyse, investigate and resolve complex IM&T queries and issues including system errors, breaches of security or confidentiality, user requirements and configuration of software and hardware.
* Develop software which is needed to support and complement the Trust’s databases.
* Test and research new hardware and software platforms to ascertain suitability for Trust deployment.
* Provide expert technical documentation.
* Demonstrate software solutions to other technical and clinical staff.
* Act as a technical liaison person for third‑party suppliers.
* Implement ICT policies and propose changes to improve service.
* Deploy EPIC Cogito upgrades.
* When out‑of‑hours support is required for the SQL farm or Cogito platform, the post-holder would be required to do overtime/on‑call and to escalates serious problems to senior members of the team.

System support

* To troubleshoot SQL farm and Cogito platform issues and resolve system issues quickly and responsibly.
* Installation and support of database/Cogito systems software.
* Monitor the Database Farm and Cogito platform, identifying any issues and responding appropriately.
* Be the key contact for 3rd‑party suppliers’ support teams.
* Maintain good relationships with suppliers.
* Ensure that the databases and services run efficiently and effectively.
* Ensure procedure for the management of all Farm servers meets system needs.
* Ensure all databases are properly backed‑up and disaster‑recovery procedures are effective and up‑to‑date.
* Regular health checks of the software and database.


Person specification


Essential qualifications

* Educated to Degree level or equivalent qualification.
* Postgraduate qualification or equivalent experience.


Desirable qualifications

* Master’s degree or equivalent postgraduate qualification.
* EPIC accreditation.


Essential experience

* Significant experience working in a hospital environment.
* Considerable experience working with databases.
* Expert experience of managing mission‑critical software.


Desirable experience

* Demonstrable experience working with various database formats.


Essential skills and abilities

* Expertise in problem solving, able to analyse and interpret highly complex database problems using own initiative and support others to develop this skill.


Desirable skills and abilities

* In‑depth specialist knowledge of NHS Information Technology procedures and expertise in NHS ICT system management.
* Expert knowledge of the key issues around system implementation.
