Paediatric Speech and Language Therapist
Totus Neurorehabilitation is a community neurorehabilitation service providing brain injury rehabilitation and cognitive assessments throughout the South West of England and South Wales, specialising in services for children and young people.
Overview
We're looking for an enthusiastic and committed Speech and Language Therapist to join our interdisciplinary paediatric neurorehabilitation team. The role is undertaken as a self‑employed associate – you will be contracted to individual clients and manage a flexible caseload from a home‑based setting. The post requires a full UK driving licence and travel across the region. Personal indemnity insurance, DBS and ICO registration are required.
Job Responsibilities
* Assess, plan and deliver evidence‑based speech, language, communication and cognitive‑communication interventions for children and young people with acquired or traumatic brain injury, stroke, or other neurological conditions.
* Conduct detailed, developmentally appropriate assessments using formal and informal tools, play‑based approaches, observation and reports from families and schools.
* Develop personalised treatment plans that support participation at home, in school and in community settings, and adjust therapy based on outcome measures.
* Provide therapy across settings, including home, nursery/school/college, community environments and remotely where appropriate.
* Support families, schools and care staff with communication strategies, cognitive‑communication approaches and paediatric dysphagia management where relevant.
* Complete risk assessments, maintain accurate clinical records, and produce clear reports for families and external agencies, including EHCP input when required.
* Contribute to multidisciplinary team case reviews, collaborative goal setting and regular communication with OTs, PTs, psychologists, dietitians, case‑managers, GPs, CAMHS and statutory services.
* Attend peer review, clinical supervision, reflective practice, and deliver training to MDT colleagues, school staff and external stakeholders when appropriate.
Qualifications & Registration
* Recognised degree in Speech and Language Therapy.
* HCPC registration and membership of RCSLT.
* Completion of advanced post‑registration training such as paediatric neurorehabilitation, dysphagia or AAC.
* Commitment to ongoing CPD and supervision.
Person Specification
Knowledge and Skills
* Detailed knowledge of communication and cognitive‑communication disorders in children with neurological presentations.
* Experience delivering specialist SLT interventions independently.
* Strong verbal and written communication skills.
* Effective time‑management and caseload prioritisation.
* Awareness of safeguarding, consent and capacity legislation.
* Ability to adapt communication methods to different developmental stages.
* Proficiency in outcome measures and goal‑setting frameworks (e.g., GAS, TOMs).
* Familiarity with digital clinical record systems.
* IT skills for online systems and cloud‑based software.
Experience
* Post‑qualification experience working with children and young people with acquired or traumatic brain injury or other neurological conditions.
* Experience managing a caseload independently.
* Experience delivering communication and cognitive‑communication interventions.
* Experience working in paediatric community neurorehabilitation settings.
* Experience contributing to EHCP processes or inter‑agency meetings.
* Experience with swallowing assessments and management (paediatric dysphagia).
