About Medical Optics
Medical Optics was established in 1982 by Drs Garry and Rosemary Treacy as a family-run ophthalmology practice in Bray, Co. Wicklow. With a foundational focus on community ophthalmology, the practice grew organically, built on a reputation for clinical excellence and patient-centred care. In 2006, we opened our second branch in Fairview, Dublin, continuing our mission to support local general practitioners and optometrists with specialist ophthalmology services.
In 2020, the practice welcomed the next generation of leadership. Dr. Max Treacy returned from a vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital to become Clinical Director, and Dr. Emma Duignan (Treacy), a consultant ophthalmologist with a special interest in cataract, oculoplastics, and inherited retinal degenerations, also joined the team. Both hold consultant posts at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital, further strengthening our ties with tertiary-level care.
Today, our team of 11 ophthalmologists provides a growing range of subspecialty services, including a comprehensive, in-practice intravitreal injection service for medical retinal conditions, made possible by our JCI accreditation, which we have proudly maintained since 2019.
Our Philosophy: A Vision for Collaborative Care
At Medical Optics, we are driven by a core belief: the future of exceptional eye care lies in the seamless integration of ophthalmology and optometry. We are fully committed to developing collaborative care pathways that empower community optometrists and provide patients with more accessible, efficient, and integrated services.
Our culture is one of genuine collegiality. We work in close partnership with our ophthalmology colleagues throughout Ireland, in both the public and independent sectors. Our guiding principle is to always do what is best for the patient, ensuring they have access to the most appropriate subspecialist expertise, whether within our practice or with our trusted external and independent colleagues.
An Era of Unprecedented Growth
Our commitment to pioneering integrated eye care has led to an exciting period of expansion. In Autumn 2025, Medical Optics began a phase of considerable expansion through new strategic collaborations designed to enhance patient access and develop a comprehensive, shared-care network across Ireland.
Our founding principle of broad-based collaboration remains central to our identity. We are deeply committed to strengthening our valued relationships with independent optometry colleagues, General Practitioners, and independent ophthalmologists across Ireland. We believe that a diverse network of partnerships is essential for providing patients with seamless access to the highest quality of care. This is an exciting time to join us as we grow our services and reinforce our commitment to a truly integrated and collegial eye care community for all patients.
