Trainee Health Visitor Opportunity
One year training, commencing January 2026, facilitated by NHS Borders and Queen Margaret University (QMU).
(Fixed term contract for 12 months - Annex 21 applies throughout the training year)
NHS Borders and QMU are offering an exciting opportunity for experienced nurses and midwives interested in pursuing a career in health visiting. Successful applicants will undertake a one-year full-time study for the Post Graduate Diploma: Health Visiting (Person Centred Practice) (Level 11) at QMU, Edinburgh, combined with practice placement in NHS Borders. Upon completion and registration on Level 3 of the NMC register, candidates will be eligible to apply for permanent Health Visiting posts within NHS Borders.
To Apply You Must
* Be an experienced nurse or midwife on the NMC register
* Be available to undertake full-time study starting January 2026
* Be available for face-to-face interview (dates to be confirmed)
* Have the required academic credit or recent study evidence
* Complete a 1500-word essay as part of the application (details provided upon shortlisting)
Standard Entry
If an applicant has obtained a relevant degree within the last 5 years, they meet the academic criteria for Standard Entry.
Non-standard Entry Options
* Degree obtained more than 5 years ago but with recent Scottish Level 11 study
* Degree more than 10 years ago but with recent Scottish Level 11 study
* No degree but recent academic study at Scottish Level 11
* Degree or academic study over 10 years ago requires prior discussion with the programme leader and recruiting manager
Stand Alone Module
If no degree or recent academic study, applicants must complete a 20-credit module on "Ethical Judgements and Decision Making". Funding opportunities may be available.
The application must include a supporting statement demonstrating understanding of the Health Visitor role, transferable skills, experience, CPD, leadership, caseload management, motivation, and rationale for studying at master's level.
References should include at least one from your line manager. Current academic status, qualifications, and transcripts must be included in the application. Selected candidates will submit a 1500-word admissions essay and complete a formal application to QMU.
Trainees follow the university calendar for holidays. NHS leave is suspended during training.
Pay during training varies based on the time remaining until qualification, as detailed in the original description.
