PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £52,000 - £62,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
Purpose Of The Role
Join BBC Sport’s Stories team as an Assistant Football Editor – Stories, where you’ll help shape compelling football narratives across platforms. You’ll lead a talented team, manage key relationships with stakeholders like the Premier League, and oversee engaging features and interviews that resonate with diverse audiences.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT
* Lead and manage a team of journalists producing multi-platform football features and interviews.
* Commission and oversee original content that sets the agenda and engages our diverse audiences.
* Use your industry contacts to secure access to top football talent and stories.
* Guide the editorial process from concept through to delivery, ensuring high standards and tight deadlines are met.
* Balance editorial ambition with operational needs, including scheduling, budgeting and resources.
* Set clear objectives, provide constructive feedback, and support ongoing performance and development.
* Work flexibly around the football calendar, including evenings and weekends as required.
* Champion diversity in both our team and our output.
* Share best practices and help drive positive change across departments.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
* Proven experience in sports journalism and editorial leadership.
* Track record of maintaining relationships with key external people in football.
* Substantial experience in managing broadcast shoots.
* Strong understanding of digital and broadcast platforms.
* Excellent communication and organisational skills.
* A track record of delivering high-quality content under pressure.
* A collaborative and forward-thinking approach.
