About the Role
The Sensory Social Worker will specialise in supporting adults with sensory loss, including Deaf, hearing loss, visual impairment and dual sensory loss. The role is based at the Hulme District Office and forms part of the Manchester Local Care Organisation’s Sensory Team.
Key responsibilities include:
* Providing person‑centred assessment, planning and delivery of support for citizens with sensory impairment.
* Co‑producing care plans with citizens, families and multidisciplinary partners, taking into account communication needs and the complexities of sensory loss.
* Monitoring, reviewing and evaluating support plans to achieve agreed outcomes.
* Safeguarding adults with sensory impairments, including risk assessment, investigation and development of protection plans.
* Working collaboratively with City Council colleagues, partner agencies and stakeholders to improve service delivery.
* Supervising and developing students, trainees and other staff where appropriate.
* Maintaining accurate records in line with statutory and council policies.
Key Accountabilities
* Effectively communicate with profoundly Deaf citizens using preferred methods such as BSL.
* Recognise the impact of visual loss and manage support for visually impaired or Deaf‑blind individuals.
* Identify social care needs and determine eligibility under the Care Act.
* Support citizens to co‑produce plans, monitor progress and evaluate outcomes.
* Implement safeguarding principles across all practice areas.
* Lead or co‑work on safeguarding investigations and develop protection plans.
* Provide advice and partnership with other teams when sensory loss is a significant factor.
* Conduct carer assessments for individuals with sensory impairment.
* Partner with the Directorate for Adult Transition for young people approaching 18 with sensory needs.
* Maintain accurate and timely records to evidence outcomes and service improvement.
* Manage assigned resources, including human and financial, to drive continuous improvement.
* Commit to continuous self‑development and promote diversity, equality and inclusion in service delivery.
Qualifications & Experience
* Valid social work qualification and registration with Social Work England.
* Experience working with Deaf, visually impaired and Deaf‑blind citizens.
* BSL skills at Level 2 or above, or willingness to undertake training.
* Knowledge of visual impairment issues and impact on independence and wellbeing.
* DBS clearance (Enhanced) and a valid driving licence if required for essential car use.
* Medical clearance via a pre‑placement health assessment.
* 2 references, preferably covering a 3‑year period.
