Job Summary
We are looking to appoint a Consultant in Anaesthesia to join our busy, friendly department at East Lancashire Hospitals. This is a fixed term 6 month position.
Department Overview
The department of Anaesthesia provides a comprehensive anaesthetic service to all specialties, with 27 theatres across 2 main sites in Blackburn and Burnley.
* Major cancer surgery in colorectal surgery, urology, gynaecology, ENT and maxillofacial surgery
* Robotic surgery for urology, colorectal and maxillofacial and gynaecological surgery
* Elective orthopaedic surgery on the BGH site with trauma and high risk elective surgery on the RBH site including inpatient paediatric surgery
* Regional vascular and hepato‑pancreatico‑biliary services
* A comprehensive nurse‑led pre‑operative assessment service with Consultant clinics including specialist vascular pre‑op clinics and cardiopulmonary exercise testing.
Main Duties
The successful candidate will provide anaesthesia for a broad range of surgical specialties on site, including Colorectal, Hepato‑Biliary, Vascular, Major Head & Neck, Orthopaedics and Trauma, and children over 6 months of age.
Job plan: 10.2 PA per week, including 1.5 for SPA, 1.2 DCC PA attributable to on‑call, remaining 6 sessions for anaesthetic services (1.25 PA per list). On‑call commitment 1:11 (1.2 PA per week) alternating between Blackburn and Burnley sites.
Responsibilities
* Provide anaesthesia for a broad range of surgical specialties.
* Ensure full registration with GMC and licence to practise.
* Maintain specialist registration or achieve admission to register within six months.
* Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, colleagues and all disciplines to facilitate best patient care.
* Supervise junior staff and lead development of services.
* Work collaboratively in a team.
Person Specification
1. Attainments
o Full registration with General Medical Council
o Inclusion on the Specialist Register or due admission to register within six months
o Previous experience within the NHS
o ALS
2. Training
o Satisfactory completion of previous posts providing professional training in all aspects of general anaesthesia
o Attendance at appropriate professional meetings and courses
3. Experience
o Practical experience in a wide range of techniques relevant to anaesthesia including advanced airway management and goal‑directed fluid therapy.
o Evidence of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and commitment to these within the Trust.
o Clinical supervisor status.
o Understanding of the need for quality in health care and how it is evidenced.
o Awareness of basic research methods and evidence‑based practice.
o Experience of audit during general professional and higher specialist training.
4. CPD
o Experience of evidence‑based medicine.
o Ability to keep up to date in the speciality.
o Clear commitment to lifelong learning.
5. Management
o Understanding of current NHS management systems including clinical governance and risk management.
o Attendance at management meetings.
6. Personal Skills
