Job Duties

The City of Norfolk is a large, coastal city with a population of approximately 245,000. The Norfolk Health District has a robust environmental health program that engages in regulatory work under state and local ordinance. Norfolk Health Department is seeking an Office Services Specialist that will supports the Environmental Health work unit, which is composed of 13 Environmental Health Specialists (EHS), three Env. Health Supervisors, one Env. Health Manager.

This position is responsible for the support of the food program (1,100 permitted establishments), hotels, barber and beauty shops, tattoo parlors, and other permitted establishments, the rabies program, swimming pool program, and food handlers class registration. In addition, it is responsible for complaint documentation, plan review documentation, phone response, counter service, and any other administrative service necessary.

The Virginia Department of Health offers 12 paid holidays, medical, dental, vision and life insurance, retirement plans (including 401a Cash Match and 457 Deferred Compensation Plan) as well as sick, family/personal, and annual leave.

Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge of office and administrative principles and practices.
• Working knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software applications.
• Ability to interpret and follow established procedures and guidelines.
• Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers, verbally and in writing.
• Considerable skills in the operation of standard office equipment.

Additional Considerations

• Experience in an office setting.
• Valid state driver’s license required.
