Overview

The Group Head of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering (MPCE) has corporate responsibility and accountability for the overall management and leadership of the MPCE Division within the Humber Health Partnership (HHP) Group, providing strategic direction and expert leadership.

The MPCE Division encompasses the following services:

* Clinical Engineering across four sites: Hull Royal Infirmary, Castle Hill Hospital, Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital, Scunthorpe General Hospital.
* Nuclear Medicine Physics providing scientific and technical support for Nuclear Medicine imaging and therapies across HRI, CHH, and DPoW.
* Radiopharmacy and the Molecular Imaging Research Centre (MIRC) supplying routine and research radiopharmaceuticals to Nuclear Medicine.
* Radiation Protection and Radiology Physics services supporting imaging services and users of ionising and hazardous non-ionising radiations across the Group and with partners (including over 300 private customers).
* Radiotherapy Physics supporting cancer radiation therapy.
* Rehabilitation Engineering providing bespoke support to patients with life-changing and progressive disabilities across the Humber region.

The MPCE Division comprises approximately 140 engineers, scientists, technicians and support staff.


Responsibilities

* Provide management and expert scientific leadership to the MPCE Division, ensuring effective services for the Group, its partners and clients, and developing services in response to clinical workload, equipment development and regulatory requirements.
* Initiate, undertake and support research and development in the MPCE fields, aligned with clinical objectives and best international practice.
* Lead the Divisional Triumvirate and chair the MPCE Divisional Board to assure a well-led, safe, caring, effective and responsive division that supports patient care in the Yorkshire and Humber area.
* Manage financial, governance and HR targets, and ensure divisional services remain fit for purpose against external and internal drivers by leading divisional strategy and operational implementation.
* Foster strategic leadership to adapt services to changes in clinical workload, technology, national policies and guidance, and provide strategic advice to senior management.
* Initiate, organise and undertake research and development in Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering with external collaboration (universities, national laboratories, industry, international partners).
* Contribute to the development of health service scientific policy and scientific/technical training at regional, national and international levels.
* Coordinate local Healthcare Scientists and contribute to regional healthcare science activities within MPCE.

Job responsibilities (detailed)

* You will provide scientific and strategic leadership to the MPCE Division, directing and managing the variety of services it provides.
* Be a Clinical Scientist qualified to Doctoral level or equivalent.
* Be subject to appropriate financial and operational governance control, with freedom to structure and deliver MPCE services across the HHP Group and its partners as deemed most effective.
* Be the overall lead for the management, organisation and coordination of the Division, ensuring high quality clinical, scientific and technical services.
* Provide strategic leadership to develop services in response to changes in workload, technology, national policies and guidance, and offer strategic advice to senior Group management.
* Initiate, organise and undertake research and development in Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering, in collaboration with external institutions and international partners.
* Contribute to the development of health service scientific policy and training at regional, national and international levels.
* Have sufficient experience to fulfil a high level role as a leading Healthcare Scientist within the Humber Health Partnership, coordinating local Healthcare Scientists and contributing to regional healthcare science activities within MPCE.


Education / Qualifications

* Honours degree in an appropriate physical science.
* PhD level education in an appropriate area of research or equivalent professional registration.
* HCPC Clinical Scientist registration.


Desirable

* Chartered status with a scientific/engineering body (e.g., CSci, CEng).
* Fellowship of professional bodies (e.g., IPEM, BIR) or potential to achieve imminently.
* Management qualification.


Knowledge, Training & Experience

* Essential: Extensive clinical experience in at least one MPCE specialty service.
* Essential: Management and Leadership experience of a specialty service, including operational, financial and HR aspects.
* Desirable: Experience in multiple MPCE services within the HHP Group.
