Job overview

We are looking for a Children’s Safeguarding Advisor to provide specialist expertise in protecting children and young people from harm, abuse, and neglect. The role is central to delivering a robust safeguarding service, offering expert advice in line with statutory child protection legislation and best practice.


The postholder will play a key role in supporting multi‑disciplinary team (MDT) decision‑making and will work closely with internal teams and external partner agencies to manage complex safeguarding concerns. A strong safeguarding presence within the service is essential to safely meeting the needs of children and young people with high levels of risk and vulnerability.

Main duties of the job

General 
•    Ensure self and others acknowledge, recognise and respect peoples expressed beliefs, preferences and choices, respecting diversity, and valuing people as individuals  
•    Take account of own behaviour and its effect on others 
•    To be aware of risk relating to aggressive and challenging behaviour amongst the client group and follow appropriate policies relating to its management. 
•    To respond appropriately and professionally to emotionally distressing situations and to support others involved in such situations 

•    Actively promote partnership working with staff and their representatives, providing a safe environment for escalation of concerns or anxieties 
•    Collate data and information as required to support effective information management and evaluation etc 
•    To support effective communication and collaboration between organisations and staff associated with the service 
•    Support learning across, and development of the whole service, beyond individual areas. Proactively identifying opportunities and ways to improve quality, efficiency and patient experience 
•    Communicate effectively and share learnings and information with colleagues in the North Hub, NHS England and others as requested by programme leadership 
•    Act with the utmost discretion and sensitivity in delivery and any discussions regarding the service 
•    Proactively identify opportunities for evaluation and potential research. Participate in any approaches or studies 
•    Demonstrate a high level of communication skills and act as an advocate for children and young people and staff within the adolescent endocrine service 
•    Work effectively within the multidisciplinary team ensuring an individualised, evidence based optimum service for each patient and their family. 
•    Actively participate in programme or oversight governance and associated reporting as necessary 
•    Take part in reflection and appropriate learning from practice, to maintain and develop competence and performance.

Academic/Professional qualification/Training

Essential criteria
  • Diploma or Degree RN Children, OR RN Adult with Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Health Visiting /School Nursing) qualification OR RN Learning Disability/RN Mental Health with paediatric experience OR Registered Social Worker (Social Work England)
  • Post registration education in child protection/safeguarding children module at graduate level and prepared to work towards
Desirable criteria
  • Assessing & Mentoring qualification
  • Recognised teaching qualification
  • Participation on leadership programme
  • Completion or willingness to undertake a Safeguarding Supervisors course

Experience/Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of experience in safeguarding children practice processes and working with complex child protection issues
  • Experience of contributing to delivering, planning and evaluation of training to groups
  • Experience of collaborative inter-agency working.
  • Evidence of supporting the learning and development of others.
  • Evidence of participation in governance, including undertaking audit and review.
  • Participation in the development of teaching programmes
  • Experience of or willingness to undertake training on sound reflective coaching/models of supervision.
  • Knowledge of relevant of evidence-based practice and experience of utilising this in practice.
  • In depth knowledge and understanding of current safeguarding children legislation and guidance.
  • Awareness of the sensitive nature of safeguarding work; including issues of equal opportunities, confidentiality, and information sharing.
  • Knowledge of Modern Slavery, Prevent and Domestic Abuse processes, including MARAC
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant experience in senior clinical or management role/s
  • Evidence of working as a supervisor / assessor
  • Awareness of current adult safeguarding legislation and guidance, including the Care Act (2014), the Mental Capacity (Amendment) Act (2019)
  • Experience of working with children or young people who are gender questioning

Skills/Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Ability to offer safeguarding advice and support to staff within own sphere of competence. This will include the ability to empower, challenge constructively and provide a learning environment as necessary
  • Able to demonstrate critical thinking skills
  • Able to contribute to developing, delivering and evaluating high quality learning packages
  • Responsive and flexible in meeting the needs of adult learners
  • IT skills including PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, Databases
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines
  • Ability to promote and demonstrate effective communication at all levels, both written and oral.
  • Evidence of ability to challenge the analysis of other constructively
  • Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills
