Purpose of the Role
To support students (in groups or one-to-one) to gain vocational skills in one or more practical trades (e.g. carpentry, plumbing, construction, mechanic’s etc) meeting the individual learning needs of the students. Post holder will create a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment that promotes personal development, employability skills, confidence, and positive outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Oarsome Chance work in the Gosport and Portsmouth area of Hampshire and we are searching for a skilled professional with a multi trade background. The ideal person for this role would need to be passionate, resilient, and able to work in an inclusive manner, to meet the needs of the young people. The charity will consider candidates with a range of trade backgrounds i.e. carpentry, construction, mechanics and/or an experienced D&T teacher, who can bring enthusiasm and creative, hands‑on ideas to their sessions. Sessions would include the delivery of accredited outcomes in line with qualification assessment criteria.
Multi Trade Skills Delivery
* Plan and deliver engaging, age‑appropriate practical sessions across a range of trades (e.g. basic construction, carpentry, painting & decorating, maintenance skills) aligned to individual learning plans and programme outcomes.
* Teach safe use of tools, materials, and equipment in line with health & safety regulations.
* Develop practical projects that build technical skills, teamwork, problem‑solving, and pride in achievement.
* Differentiate activities to meet a wide range of abilities, needs, and learning styles.
* Maintain a well‑organised, safe workshop environment, ensuring regular risk assessments are completed.
Mentoring and Student Support
* Build positive, trusting relationships with students, particularly those at risk of disengagement.
* Act as a role model, promoting positive behaviour, attendance, and attitudes to learning.
* Provide 1:1 and small group mentoring to support emotional wellbeing and personal development.
* Support students in setting and achieving individual goal.
Communication and Safeguarding Responsibilities
* Communicate effectively with parents/carers, social workers, and external agencies where needed.
* Provide regular feedback on progress, concerns, and achievements of young people.
* Uphold the organisation’s values, safeguarding procedures, and equality and diversity commitments.
* As member of the Oarsome Chance team the post‑holder will have a responsibility in every circumstance to promote and safeguard the welfare of young people in the provision.
Person specifications
Essential Skills
* Proven experience in carpentry, woodworking, or a trade background (NVQ certification).
* Experience working with children or young people, ideally within alternative education, youth work, or similar settings delivering vocational or skill‑based training.
* Strong understanding of behaviour management and trauma‑informed practice (or willingness to develop this).
* Ability to build positive, respectful relationships with young people who may be disengaged from education.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
* Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
Desirable Skills
* Teaching, mentoring, or coaching qualification (or willingness to work towards one).
* Experience working with SEND, SEMH, or vulnerable young people.
* Health & Safety or First Aid qualification.
* Experience of working within the charity or alternative provision sector.
