Salary: £35,116.00 - £37,174 with progression to £45,413 per annum

The Role
We are a team of security professionals and between us we will carry out foot patrols covering our 50-acre campus and 100+ buildings across Newcastle City Centre, supporting students, colleagues and visitors as needed and ensuring our spaces are kept safe. We have developed an interactive map showing the areas we cover and patrol and to give you some insight into the full breadth of the University campus
Our Security Team play a pivotal role in ensuring that our students, visitors and colleagues have a safe and enjoyable experience on campus. You will have the opportunity for development, and we will fund your SIA licence. We are looking for people who can:
- Oversee response to situations on campus in a calm and professional manner
- Liaise with all stakeholders to lead change within the Newcastle University's security culture
- Demonstrate strong leadership, mentorship and customer service skills
- Support a diverse student population from a wide range of cultural backgrounds
You will oversee the day-to-day operational management of the Estate Security Service ensuring that standards are effectively maintained to protect University buildings and property and provide a safe, secure environment for staff, students, and visitors to the University. Ensuring that all security teams provide a consistent, effective level of service throughout the University, including Accommodation and Hospitality Service (AHS) tenanted sites in accordance with Service Level Agreements. Close working with the Head of Security in identifying security threats and developing effective solutions. Where necessary, research, formulation and documentation of draft policies and procedures.

Key Accountabilities
* Deputise for the Head of Security in their absence and to contribute to strategic decision making and crime prevention
* Implementation of operational instructions and guidance documents
* Day to day management of Security Team Leaders and monitoring of operational security functions to provide an efficient, cost-effective service
* Represent the security service, as required at high level meetings
* Carry out investigations into crime, security related incidents and disciplinary matters, producing and submitting written reports
* Collate and analyse information from all security teams to identify crime and security trends to provide effective solutions
* Management of the University CCTV system and recording equipment (including Body Worn Video) to a consistent standard to ensure fair and lawful operation in accordance with the University CCTV Code of Practice and Operating Instructions
* Ensure that all traffic movement and car parking is correctly regulated
* Management of all technical resources as stated for operational use by all security staff inclusive of damage analysis and repairs
* Organisation of training for the operation of all technical systems and devices
* Ensuring that all devices are up to date with security or feature updates
* Liaison with external agencies and service providers, including emergency services
* Driving the requirement of discipline within teams using HR policy and procedure where appropriate
* Maintenance of the annual renewal of security radio licences
* Organisation and initiation of promotional events for the safeguarding SafeZone app to encourage maximum take-up by staff and students
* Representation of the Security Team and University whilst attending both internal and external meetings/forums relating to security technical assets and working practices
* Provision of technical and operational assistance when providing security support for major events, and the overseeing of evidence provision for internal and external investigations
The Person
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential
* Extensive understanding of current legal practices and guidelines, including identification of offences, powers of arrest, data protection act, human rights issues, health and safety and University policies and procedures.
* Knowledge of modern security systems including CCTV, digital recording systems, intruder alarm systems; and also, management and administration of such systems.
* Knowledge of current security theories and their application
* Good Knowledge of security industry legislation, procedures, and policies
* Good basic education, particularly in oral and written English
* Hold a full, current, valid UK driving licence (manual)
* Have relevant experience in providing training
Attributes and Behaviour
* Close working with the Estate Security Manager in researching, formulating and documenting policies
* Ability to manage own time effectively and effectively delegate responsibilities in an effective manner
* Able to identify areas for improvement and provide cost effective solutions that interface with section and University strategies
* Prepared to make decisions on particularly important matters of a diverse nature based upon knowledge of legislation and University policies
* Ability to assess situations quickly, sometimes on the basis of telephone briefs and make appropriate effective decisions
Qualifications
* Hold a managerial qualification at Level 5 or be prepared to achieve it within 18 months of appointment
