Overview
Advanced Specialist Pharmacist for Surgery role at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust. The post involves working within a Major Trauma Centre offering tertiary services across a range of surgical specialties. The successful candidate will support the Lead Pharmacist for Surgery & Critical Care to deliver high‑quality clinical pharmacy services across the Surgical Care Group and may pursue consultant‑level credentialing while contributing as a non‑medical prescriber within Surgery.
Responsibilities
* Provide a high‑quality patient‑focused clinical pharmacy service for patients within the Surgery Pharmacy team.
* Develop a clinical interest within a chosen area of clinical practice to support clinical service for a specific group of patients within the surgery care group.
* Act as team leader for the ward‑based pharmacy team and as a team member of the Surgery Pharmacy.
* Undertake teaching and clinical supervision of pharmacy staff and other healthcare employees.
* Provide specialist clinical pharmacy services and advice to clinical specialties with a high level of clinical effectiveness.
* Lead and coordinate the clinical pharmacy team, ensuring training and competence of pharmacists, technicians and other staff.
* Be a role model as a clinical pharmacist and team leader within the multidisciplinary team; lead in Surgery locally, regionally and nationally.
* Practice as an independent prescriber and work towards advanced clinical practice.
* Engage in Quality Improvement and practice research; write and review policies and procedures relevant to pharmacy practice in Surgery.
* Monitor, evaluate and implement medicines related protocols and guidelines in Surgery; ensure appropriate clinical pharmacy service coverage.
* Propose policy or service changes with multidisciplinary and resource implications; configure inductions for pharmacists in Surgery and the pharmacy department.
* Assist in developing and implementing PGDs and non‑medical prescribing initiatives when appropriate.
* Establish partnerships with health and social care providers; act as a resource within and outside the Trust.
* Provide treatment recommendations based on evidence, participate in antimicrobial surveillance and promote formulary compliance.
* Attend MDT meetings, ward rounds and other multidisciplinary forums to facilitate treatment decisions.
* Manage day‑to‑day medicines queries and provide patient consultations; refer to community services when appropriate.
* Liaise with healthcare staff, patients and carers; interpret clinical data to guide drug therapy; ensure appropriate test requests when needed.
* Support seamless transfer of patients between healthcare settings and provide education to healthcare professionals including medical students.
* Pharmacists should work largely unsupervised with professional discretion; clinical supervision may be arranged as needed.
* Participate in wider departmental rotas where needed.
Qualifications

Essential
* Master's Degree (or equivalent) in Pharmacy
* Current General Pharmaceutical Council registration
* Postgraduate Clinical Pharmacy Certificate
* Non‑medical prescriber (or willing to undertake when requested)
* Postgraduate Clinical Pharmacy Diploma
Desirable
* Registration with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society
* UKCPA membership
* Active involvement with Surgery & Theatres Group within UKCPA or equivalent
* Postgraduate leadership qualification; postgraduate qualification in a specialty
Knowledge & Experience
Essential
* Knowledge of clinical pharmacy and drug use in Surgery; experience across surgical specialties
* Senior pharmacy management experience; effective leadership and communication
* Strategic care agenda understanding and ability to apply priorities locally
* Strong written and oral communication, report writing and CPD evidence
* Teaching, training and mentorship experience
* Ward round experience and multidisciplinary working
Desirable
* Knowledge of treatment pathways, commissioning of therapies for Surgery
* Experience in hospital directive management and service design
* Research presentation and budgeting/staff management experience
