Job Summary

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital King's Lynn NHS Foundation Trust is welcoming applications for a Consultant General and Benign Biliary/Upper GI Surgeon.

The successful applicant will provide benign general surgical and upper gastrointestinal surgical services to the community served by the Queen Elizabeth Hospital NHS Trust and play a key role with colleagues in further developing general surgical services. They will provide, with consultant colleagues, a service in general surgery involving in‑patient and out‑patient work and share in the on‑call rota.

This is a new post to support the development of the General Surgery service. All staff support and ancillary facilities are in place. There will be office space for the post‑holder with a dedicated computer and IT facilities and medical secretarial support.

We welcome informal visits and enquiries.


Main Duties

* To provide a general surgical service including general surgical elective activity and 1 in 9 on call emergency cover for general surgery at QEH
* To provide elective benign biliary/Upper GI surgical service
* Consultants are required to have continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and for the proper funding of their departments. They are expected to undertake administrative duties that arise from these responsibilities.
* To provide an Outpatients service for new referrals and for ongoing care
* To provide an on‑call commitment of 1:9 at QEH
o To live within 10 miles of QEH or within 30 mins travel time to QEH


About Us

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) King's Lynn is West Norfolk has a superb unspoilt coastline with pretty villages, all with their own individual charm. The medieval port of King's Lynn has some very interesting architecture.

We provide a comprehensive range of specialist and general acute services to around 331,000 people across West and North Norfolk, in addition to parts of Breckland, Cambridgeshire and South Lincolnshire. We have more than 4,000 staff and volunteers and approximately 500 beds on a single site. Some specialist services and clinics are provided in community facilities, such as the North Cambridgeshire hospital in Wisbech. We work in partnership with neighbouring hospitals for the provision of tertiary services.

In February 2022 the QEH the Care Quality Commission rated the Trust as ‘Good’ in all of the core services they inspected, and recommended the Trust moves out of the recovery support system (formerly special measures).

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications

* MMBS or equivalent medical qualification.
* FRCS or equivalent medical qualification.

Desirable Qualifications

* MD, PhD or evidence of equivalent training and experience.


Entry Criteria

Essential

* Full Registration and a licence to practise with the General Medical Council.
* Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) at time of interview.
* Training and interest in benign elective and emergency general surgery.
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the emergency care of patients, both paediatric and adults.
* Training and interest in laparoscopic benign upper gastrointestinal and/or laparoscopic benign biliary surgery.
* A wide range of clinical skills and practice in the specialty.
* IT skills.
* A commitment to the development of a high quality cost effective service to the local community.
* Advanced communications skills training.
* Energy, enthusiasm and ability to work under pressure.

Desirable

* GI endoscopy skills.
