South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust (STSFT) is recruiting a Trainee Cognitive Behaviour Therapist to support children and young people across South Tyneside, Sunderland and Gateshead.
Job Summary
In this role you will deliver evidence‑based psychological treatment to children and young people and their families in one of our established Children and Young Peoples Mental Health Services (CYPMHS). As a trainee you will attend and complete the CBT – PG Diploma in Evidence Based Psychological Therapy (CBT) at Northumbria University within 12 months, commencing January 2026. You will also provide high‑intensity CBT interventions under supervision during your training period.
Responsibilities
* Deliver evidence‑based therapeutic interventions for children and young people.
* Carry out assessments and develop treatment plans in line with NICE guidelines.
* Attend and complete the mandatory CBT training programme at Northumbria University.
* Provide training and support to colleagues where appropriate.
* Work effectively as part of a multi‑disciplinary team.
* Meet service targets and manage caseload efficiently.
* Engage with vulnerable and underserved populations, using interpreters when necessary.
* Maintain accurate clinical records, reports and letters.
* Carry out risk assessments and safeguard children and young people.
* Ensure continuous professional development and reflect on practice.
Person Specification – Experience
* Experience working in a children and young people’s mental health service.
* Experience of assessing and treating children, young people and their families.
* Experience working within community or education settings.
* Knowledge of safeguarding and welfare promotion for children and young people.
Person Specification – Skills and Knowledge
* Working knowledge of universal and specialist children’s mental health service provision.
* Strong organisational and time‑management skills.
* High standard written and oral communication, including clear report writing.
* Ability to engage vulnerable and underserved populations.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other IT packages.
* Flexible work across various environments and occasional unsocial hours.
* Ability to work under supervision and incorporate feedback for professional development.
* Experience of carrying out risk assessments within scope of practice.
Person Specification – Qualifications
* Willingness to complete the CBT – PG Diploma in Evidence Based Psychological Therapy (CBT) at Northumbria University within 12 months.
* Professional qualification in teaching, nursing, social work, occupational health or counselling, or within a psychological therapy discipline.
* Eligibility for training: no CYP‑PT funded training programme accessed within the last 2 years of qualifying.
* Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.
