Locum Consultant in Adult Critical Care

Full‑time, 12 month appointment, Locum Consultant with a responsibility to Adult Critical Care at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
A recent vacancy has created the need for a Locum Consultant in Adult Critical Care at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. The post will emphasise clinical work in Adult Critical Care, with opportunities for teaching, administration and development.
The contract will be for 10.0 PAs, split into 7.5 DCC PAs in Critical Care and 1.5 core SPAs. One further PA may be used for additional clinical or non‑clinical duties such as governance, quality improvement or education, agreed with the Head of Service. As a locum appointment for critical care, the role will not involve clinical work in another speciality.
Main duties of the job
The new consultant will join the existing NUH workforce of 36 Critical Care consultants who work closely together. The team ethos is supportive, facilitating a positive environment for new consultant appointments.
Successful candidates will undertake formalised critical care rotations and must be able to work flexibly across the Queen's Medical Centre (QMC) and Nottingham City Hospital (NCH) campuses.
Only the adult critical care out‑of‑hours duty roster will be required. Night on‑call frequency is currently 1:9 and weekend on‑call 1:4.5, subject to change with future expansion in critical care bed numbers and workforce.
Teaching duties will be expected as required, and new consultants may choose a mentor from the existing Critical Care consultant team.

At NUH we provide a range of national and internationally‑renowned specialist services and are at the forefront of new surgical procedures and research programmes. We house the East Midlands Major Trauma Centre, Nottingham Children's Hospital and, in partnership with the University of Nottingham, host a Biomedical Research Centre.
As a teaching hospital, we play a key role in the education and training of doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals, supported by strong relationships with universities across the East Midlands.
The critical care area on QMC Campus is divided into a 29‑bed Intensive Care (Level 3) and a geographically separate 20‑bed Level 2 high‑dependency area. Major surgical subspecialties at QMC include Trauma, Neurosurgery, Emergency Orthopaedics, Hepatobiliary Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Maxillofacial and ENT surgery and Spinal Surgery.
The Critical Care Department at the City campus has 17 flexibly‑used beds. Major subspecialties at the City Hospital Campus include Cardiac Surgery (CICU), Thoracic Surgery, Upper GI Surgery, Elective Orthopaedics, Urology, Burns and Plastics, Renal Medicine, Oncology, Haematology and Respiratory Medicine, Elective Colorectal surgery.
Job responsibilities
The appointee will be expected to fulfil the following duties with the agreed Job Plan.
Clinical
* Responsibility for the management of patients admitted under their care, covering a full range of surgical and medical emergency patients.
* Provision, with Consultant colleagues, of a comprehensive elective and emergency service.
* Provision of reciprocal cover for periods of leave.
* Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and the proper functioning of the department.
* Cover for short term absences or periods of sick leave.
These duties are subject to review as service requirements change. Any alterations will be mutually agreed between the appointee, their Consultant colleagues and the Trust.
The person appointed will devote substantially the whole of their time to the duties of the post and give them priority at all times.
Governance and Audit
Each Consultant is expected to take an active role in clinical governance activities including, but not restricted to, clinical audit, incident reporting, review of complaints, risk management, coroner referrals and reports, CPD and Evidence‑Based Practice.
Teaching
Both main campuses of the Trust are major centres for undergraduate and postgraduate education and teaching. The successful candidate will play a significant role in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, supported by a framework for medical education delivery and opportunities to enhance clinical and teaching skills through Continuing Professional Development.
Research
Consultants who wish to undertake research must obtain approval from the Trust R&I Department and relevant ethical approval, adhering to the National Framework for Research Governance.
Other Duties as Agreed
Additional roles may be accepted subject to discussion and agreement with the Head of Service to ensure impact on the specialty and to allow any necessary job plan amendments.
Person Specification
Professional Registration
* Full GMC registration
* Eligible to be included on the Specialist Register via Joint CCT (or within 6 months of CCT at date of interview) in Intensive Care Medicine and a suitable partner speciality (or equivalent) or Single CCT (or within 6 months of CCT at date of interview) in Intensive Care Medicine (or equivalent) or Triple CCT in GIM/Respiratory/ICM (or within 6 months)
Professional Qualifications/Development
* Successful completion of a CCT training programme in critical care medicine (as defined by the FICM) or equivalent, or within 6 months of CCT at date of interview
* Valid trauma life‑support certification or 6 months experience in a major trauma centre in last 2 years
* Post‑graduate qualifications in ICM such as FFICM, EDIC or equivalent
* FRCA UK or MRCP or equivalent higher specialist qualification in Anaesthesiology, Medicine or Emergency medicine (FRCEM)
* Membership of IC/ESICM/SCCM
* ATLS/ALS Instructor status
Clinical skills/experience
* At least 18 months experience and extended training in Adult Critical Care Medicine, including extensive contemporary critical care experience in the last 12 months
* Competence in transfer and safe retrieval as evidenced by CCT
* Specific training in communication skills
* Specific training in patient safety and/or human factors
* Specific training in education/simulation‑based training/experience
* FUSIC trained
* Interest in critical care rehab and follow‑up
* Able to develop, present and operationalise coherent ideas for service development/delivery
* Able to work in a team
* Excellent leadership skills
* Understand the wider NHS changes including ICB
* Higher management degree or qualification or training
* Experience of change management
