Role Overview
The Locum Consultant will deliver high-quality care to critically ill patients across two hospital sites. Responsibilities include leading ward rounds, managing admissions and discharges, supervising junior staff, and contributing to teaching, research, and service development. The job plan is flexible and can be tailored to individual interests, including involvement with the South West critical care transfer service, Retrieve.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead ward rounds and manage complex ICU cases
* Provide consultant-level input on patient care decisions
* Supervise junior doctors and Advanced Critical Care Practitioners
* Participate in teaching and mentoring programmes
* Engage in clinical governance, audits, and quality improvement
* Contribute to research and regional collaboration initiatives
* Support service development and innovation across both sites
Required Skills and Experience
* Full GMC registration with licence to practise
* MBChB or equivalent medical degree
* CCT in Intensive Care Medicine (or CESR equivalent)
* On UK Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT
* Minimum 4 years of experience in Critical Care
* Competence in managing critically ill patients independently
* Experience stabilising critically ill children for transfer
* Strong decision-making and communication skills
* Experience in postgraduate and multidisciplinary teaching
* Participation in clinical audit and quality improvement
* Commitment to professional development and reflective practice
* FFICM or equivalent fellowship
* Joint CCT or CESR in a second specialty (e.g. Anaesthetics, Emergency Medicine)
* Higher qualification in medical education
* Experience teaching across multidisciplinary teams
* Participation in research and guideline development
* Previous leadership or management roles
* Familiarity with NHS governance systems
