Brief Description
A Network Rail Distribution and Plant Technician is responsible for maintaining, testing, repairing, and installing railway infrastructure equipment such as HV Switchgear, DC breakers, battery chargers, Points Heating, EICR testing, generators, lighting, and telecommunications. The role involves working in all weather conditions, on the frontline, and at heights. When competent, you'll develop management skills by deputising for the Team Leader.
The technician assists in all aspects of infrastructure maintenance, primarily off-track in lineside buildings, ensuring the railway operates safely and efficiently through inspections, fault troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance. The role requires technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and a strong safety focus.

About the Role (External)
Technicians specialize in disciplines such as Distribution & Plant, working to keep power flowing through the electrified railway safely and efficiently. The work involves manual tasks, working outdoors in all conditions, often transporting equipment across challenging terrain. Safety, teamwork, and leadership are critical, with opportunities to develop into future team leaders.
Key transferable skills include leadership, communication, technical knowledge, safety awareness, problem-solving, willingness to learn, and relevant qualifications such as City & Guilds 2365 Level 2 or equivalent.
Additional Information
* Shift work involving days, nights, weekends, and on-call duties.
* Outdoor work in all weather conditions, including vegetation clearance.
* Employment contingent on drug and alcohol testing, medical assessments, and BPSS checks for external candidates.
* Must hold a manual driving license (category B) for at least a year and live within 60 minutes of the location.
* Work at heights may be required with appropriate training.
Essential Criteria
* Qualified Electrician with knowledge of safe work organization.
* Strong communication skills.
* Experience in inspection, faulting, maintenance, and renewal techniques.
* Willingness to work shifts outdoors in all weather conditions.
* Valid driving license for at least a year.
* City & Guilds 2365 Level 2 or equivalent, 18th Edition BS7671, IT skills.
Desirable Criteria
* Leadership experience.
* Experience with safe systems of work, testing, and inspection (e.g., City & Guilds 2391).
* Experience with mechanical systems, HV/DC equipment, generators, points heating, or safety-critical communications.
