Network Overview
The Thames Valley Vascular Network (TVVN) provides care to a population of just over 2.2 million across Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire & Berkshire. The Network consists of three NHS trusts:
* Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust (BHT)
* Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUHFT)
* Royal Berkshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (RBHFT)
The trusts work collaboratively to centralise elective major arterial surgery & non‑elective surgery at John Radcliffe Hospital (OUHFT) whilst maintaining day‑case surgery and outpatient appointments at local hospitals in Buckinghamshire & Berkshire as well as some local inpatient treatment & review where appropriate.
The postholder will be employed by OUHFT. They are expected to adhere to the local policies of all trusts when delivering services and to work collaboratively with colleagues across the Network to develop effective and efficient patient pathways.
Role Summary
The successful applicant will join a team of nine consultant vascular surgeons, eight consultant interventional radiologists and seven vascular clinical nurse specialists within the TVVN. They will work closely with these colleagues and local GPs across the network to develop local services and a streamlined pathway for vascular patients requiring inpatient care in Oxford.
Main Duties
The postholder’s duties will be based in John Radcliffe Hospital and cover the full range of elective and emergency endovascular and open surgery in Oxford, including rare paediatric cases. They will work within a team covering Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire patients and will provide cross cover for leave. The department runs a Consultant of the Week arrangement for on‑call cover; the responsibility for all in‑patients rests with the Consultant of the Week when the postholder is off site.
All aspects of vascular surgery are undertaken by the surgical department, with the following common procedures:
* Aortic disorders – open and endovascular procedures, including complex aortic repairs, with close collaboration with the cardiac service to offer a comprehensive service.
* Carotid endarterectomy – one of the busiest centres for surgical treatment of carotid disease, including carotid stenting.
* Peripheral vascular disease, including diabetic foot disorder – strong link with the Oxford Bone Infection Unit and OCDEM to offer a comprehensive diabetic foot service.
* Venous disease – tertiary deep venous service with a robust MDT, using primarily endovascular techniques for deep venous disorders.
Research, teaching and continuing professional development are integral components of the role. The postholder will participate in teaching programmes, contribute to research, mentor junior staff and keep up to date with advances in the field. Management responsibilities include complying with Trust policies, administrative duties and supporting the clinical department under the direction of the lead clinician.
