The Company
Our client is a long-established UK manufacturer of industrial equipment, specialising in the design and production of special purpose machinery and precision engineered parts. With a history dating back to the 1940's, they are a privately owned, third-generation family business with a turnover of around £12 million.
Operating from a single site, they employ over 100 staff across manufacturing, design, sales, and repair services.
Their key strength is their full cradle-to-grave capability, with design, machining, fabrication, electrical assembly, and testing all completed in-house.
The Role
As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will join a small, experienced design team of 3 engineers, working primarily on the development and improvement of existing product ranges. This is a hands-on, design-focused role with strong links to manufacturing, where you'll be involved in everything from concept through to production support.
Your responsibilities will include:
* Designing precision machined and fabricated components
* Producing 3D models and 2D drawings using SolidWorks (80% 3D)
* Supporting R&D and continuous improvement of existing products
* Creating and managing Bills of Materials (BOMs)
* Liaising with shop floor, suppliers, and internal teams
* Assisting with customer enquiries and technical queries
* Using ERP systems to manage design data and components
What We're Looking For
* Minimum 1–2 years' experience using SolidWorks (or similar 3D CAD)
* Experience designing manufactured components (machining or fabrication)
* Strong understanding of how products are made and function
* Detail-oriented with a passion for engineering and problem solving
* Ability to work closely with manufacturing teams
* Good communication skills and a team-oriented mindset
