Overview

This post would be particularly beneficial for those doctors wishing to gain additional senior registrar experience in obstetrics and gynaecology following CCT/CESR, in a supportive environment. This post provides an opportunity to complete the RCOG SIPM in Leadership and Management, with encouragement to complete quality improvement projects, attend relevant meetings (eg. Governance, PMRT, Gynae/Obs directorate meetings) and gain experience alongside the Clinical Directors and Directorate team in line with the SIPM curriculum. In addition, the Trust has a leadership programme with relevant courses. This post will provide the opportunity for the post holder to participate in clinical work at ST6-7. The post holder will be expected to be competent at skills ST1-5 according to the RCOG Training matrix.

The post holders will be required to contribute to a max 48-hour EWTD full shift rota. The remainder of the job plan each week will consist of general middle grade duties, allowing the successful candidate to maintain their skills in general Obstetrics and Gynaecology.


Main duties of the job

* To support the inpatient service in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at New Cross Hospital.
* Outpatient workload: duties involve antenatal/gynaecology clinics and elective operating theatre lists.
* Research, education, audit and continuing professional development.
* In conjunction with colleagues, to ensure that the requirements of clinical governance are met.
* Duties will involve labour ward and emergency gynaecology cover, antenatal/gynaecology clinics and elective operating theatre lists. The post holder will be responsible for the clinical care of obstetric and gynaecological patients under supervision as necessary.
* The post holder will be responsible for the maintenance of proper case records and investigations on patients, and correspondence with General Practitioners and others as required.


About us

High risk Obstetrics/Fetal Medicine: The Directorate has an active fetal and maternal medicine service, with a number of specialist antenatal services. There is a good case mix on Delivery Suite with a large level 3 neonatal unit.

Gynaecologic surgery, including Minimal Access Surgery: There are excellent opportunities for this area of practice. This department is well known in the region for providing training in general gynaecological surgery. There is opportunity for senior trainees to have indirectly supervised lists.

Ambulatory Gynaecology: The Directorate delivers ambulatory gynaecology services from both New Cross Hospital and Cannock Chase Hospital. These include diagnostic and therapeutic Colposcopy, diagnostic hysteroscopy, outpatient endometrial resection and endometrial ablation.

Urogynaecology: We offer advanced urogynaecology and advanced urodynamic investigations including video urodynamics. Regular MDT meetings are held with the colorectal and urology teams. The department undertakes long term data collection and is a recruitment centre for randomised controlled trials.

Robotic surgery: This is actively used by gynaecological surgeons for gynae-oncology procedures.

* To take responsibility for continuing professional education in accordance with guidelines set out by the appropriate college/faculty/professional body.
* To initiate and participate in research and audit programmes in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.
* To work in collaboration with colleagues in developing skills to provide new ways of working across different professions, organisations i.e. community/primary care.
* In conjunction with colleagues, to ensure that the requirements of clinical governance are met.
* Duties will involve labour ward and emergency gynaecology cover, antenatal/gynaecology clinics and elective operating theatre lists. The post holder will be responsible for the clinical care of obstetric and gynaecological patients under supervision as necessary.
* The post holder will be responsible for the maintenance of proper case records and investigations on patients, and correspondence with General Practitioners and others as required.
* General elements: participate in clinical and other service activities to ensure a high standard of patient care; work flexibly and cross cover for colleagues; take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training; contribute to management and development of the clinical service; contribute to research and development of the department; provide cover for colleagues as appropriate; observe Trust policies and procedures; maintain health and safety; ensure contacts for staff; study leave within budget; appointable as full-time with educational supervision and mentorship.

Clinical audit/departmental teaching

The Trust has a supportive environment and is small enough for personal contact with colleagues from a wide variety of disciplines. Obstetrics and Gynaecology teaching takes place weekly with a regular teaching and audit session schedule; a multidisciplinary mortality and morbidity meeting is held monthly. The appointment is a whole-time appointment to the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust. The post holder will be managerially accountable to the Clinical Director of Obstetrics & Gynaecology. Leave arrangements, health clearance, and DBS clearance are required where applicable. You may be asked to cover emergencies as requested by Consultants, but this will not be a prolonged requirement. Annual leave entitlement is 27 days plus 8 bank holidays per annum, pro rata for contracts of less than 12 months.


Person Specification

Professional Qualification

* Full GMC Registration
* MRCOG

Experience

* At least 7 years relevant experience
* Career evidence of a commitment to the specialty
* Experience on Senior Tier (ST6-7) Rota

Ability & Skills

* Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other agencies
* Able to undertake on-call work on the ST6-7 Tier in Obstetrics & Gynaecology
* Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team

Research & Audit

* Evidence of clinical research / audit / guidelines / service improvement projects

Education and Teaching

* Experience in teaching

Management Skills

* Good organisational & management skills

Leadership

* Good organisational ability and a willingness to be flexible in accordance with the demands of team working

Qualifications

* MB BS (or equivalent)
