Hays Education are working with a well‑established and vibrant school in Blackburn seeking a Finance Assistant to join their friendly and professional finance team. This is a full-time position (40 hours) offered on an initial 12 month fixed‑term contract, supporting the Finance Manager and wider finance team function to ensure accurate, efficient andpliant financial operations.
School finance experience is desirable, but confidence working with finance systems such as SIMS FMS, Access, Xero, or ApprovalMax would be an advantage. An enhanced DBS is required.
Your new role
1. Manage day‑to‑day finance operations, including taking payments, updating trackers and supporting credit control to keep accounts accurate and up to date.
2. Process, code and verify Purchase Ledger invoices using finance systems, ensuring smooth approval and timely payments.
3. Handle supplier queries, reconcile accounts and prepare the weekly BACS payment run to maintain strong financial control.
4. Process staff expenses, trip payments and credit card transactions, including accurate journal posting and reconciliation.
5. Maintain and organise student finance files and trade payables records, supporting efficient, audit‑ready documentation.
6. Place orders and process online payments for teaching staff, ensuring purchases are logged andpliant with school procedures.
7. Update key finance trackers and analysis sheets, including trips, activities, subscriptions, marketing spend and external hire ie.
8. Support the wider finance team with journals, balance sheet reconciliations and wage collation.
What you'll need to succeed
9. AAT or other finance qualification would be an advantage.
10. Experience in a purchase ledger, finance or accounts role, ideally within an education or public sector setting.
11. Strong numeracy, accuracy and organisational skills.
12. Confidence using accounting systems and MS Office packages.
13. Ability tomunicate clearly with colleagues, parents and external organisations.
14. A proactive, team focused approach and willingness to support a busy finance function.
