Responsibilities
* Provide specialist clinical care for patients post surgery in the surgical division.
* Take responsibility for the holistic care of a group of patients and their families, including answering questions after surgery and assisting in organizing work as required.
* Opportunity to take charge of the ward alongside a Sister/Charge Nurse to develop coordination and leadership skills.
* Work within and lead a clinical care team.
* Take personal responsibility and accountability for ensuring Trust and local policies and procedures are known and followed, in line with the NMC Code.
* Assess, plan, provide, maintain and evaluate patient care.
* Supervise and guide other staff, including healthcare assistants and students on a daily basis.
* Mentor/assess learners such as student nurses and support workers to contribute to a good learning environment.
* Admit and discharge patients in accordance with local policy.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities
* Undertake clinical skills training related to post-surgical care and provide high-quality nursing care.
* Work independently and as part of a nursing and multi-professional team.
* Respond to emergency situations in relation to patient condition while supporting recovery post-surgery, taking prompt and appropriate action.
* Communicate effectively with patients and the multidisciplinary team; contribute to a safe and therapeutic environment.
* Teach and demonstrate nursing skills and supervise new staff and learners.
* Maintain responsibility for care of named patients and for the actions of staff under supervision.
* Plan, implement and evaluate individual patient care; coordinate admissions and discharges as needed.
* Ensure documentation and records comply with Trust policies and NMC standards.
* Check readiness and availability of nursing supplies and equipment.
* Follow Trust Policies and Procedures.
Education/Training/Qualifications
Essential criteria
* Registered Nurse with current live NMC registration/pin
* Evidence of continuing professional development
Desirable criteria
* Teaching and assessing qualification (998 or equivalent) or willingness to undertake after 2 years post-registration
Work Experience
Essential criteria
* Willingness to undertake training for extended ward/dept roles (IV drug administration, cannulation, venepuncture, ECGs, history taking and physical examination)
* Ideally currently working in an acute hospital setting as a qualified nurse or qualifying student
Desirable criteria
* Recent surgical experience
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Essential criteria
* Advanced communication skills, written and verbal
* Basic IT skills with willingness to develop (Lorenzo, ICE, EDMS etc)
* Time management and problem-solving abilities
* Ability to organise own workload
Desirable criteria
* Knowledge of Trust policies including manual handling, health & safety and infection control
