The Software Engineering Principal leads the delivery and customer relationships for end‑to‑end technical solutions in the GSS Enablers Engineering space, ensuring customer requirements are successfully delivered by a first‑class technical professional services team.
Location: Cheltenham. Hours: Monday‑Friday, 37.5 hours per week. Eligibility: Must be eligible for DV Security Clearance and have lived in the UK for 10+ years.
Responsibilities
* Own and lead the engineering organisation’s ability to deliver high‑quality outcomes on time and on budget.
* Operate as an SME within own field of expertise, setting the technical direction and determining the optimum solution design for customers.
* Set technical direction regarding decisions, technology choices and architecture for high‑performance products, balancing short‑term impact with long‑term transformation.
* Champion the improvement of design and delivery capabilities for end‑to‑end technical solutions.
* Lead customer solution design engagement, overseeing statement of work creation and any third‑party deliverables.
* Drive the development of strong senior‑level customer relationships at the programme level.
* Ensure consistency in architecture and technical processes, reducing costs and increasing productivity.
* Lead the resolution of all solution issues, root‑cause analysis, troubleshooting and escalations.
* Identify potential risks and implement controls and mitigations, ensuring compliance with relevant policies.
Essential Skills / Experience
* Encourage engineering excellence and lead by example as an SME practitioner.
* Set strategy for process improvement and ways of working.
* Work closely with customers, utilising relevant methodologies in collaboration with cross‑functional teams.
* Develop compelling proposals and bid responses.
* Leverage diverse and inclusive thinking to maximise team effectiveness.
* Gather information, analyse scenarios and reach decisions.
* Lead talent development through learning and reflection.
* Influence processes that ensure effective IT use to meet Enablers and Engineering goals.
* Maintain positive engagement, budgetary and resource management standards.
* Maintain DV+ clearance.
* Broad experience leading end‑to‑end software/platforms/systems engineering teams.
* Lead innovative, technically complex programmes in a professional services environment.
Desirable Skills / Experience
* Member of a professional body, e.g., BCS, IET, qualified CEng.
