Area Ranger - Settle Summary Working in the Yorkshire Dales’ most stunning places and spaces, come rain or shine, your love of the outdoors will inspire others as you strive to ensure that landscapes are properly managed and beautifully presented. It’s a particularly exciting time for nature in the Dales as we work with tenants, neighbouring landowners and a dedicated project team to develop proposals for a major DEFRA-funded Landscape Recovery Scheme across much of our landholding and beyond. In this role, you may be required to work some weekends, bank holiday and evenings. Working closely with tenant farmers and partners, the Countryside Team includes Rangers and specialist staff centred around two separate bases in Malhamdale and Upper Wharfedale. Your main focus will be in Upper Wharfedale. You will report to the Countryside Manager and lead our Ranger team managing NT land from Kettlewell to Cray and Wensleydale to Richmond. This is a huge and remote area comprising largely moorland and woodland habitats. What you'll be doing You will be the essential lead for an operational team and the day-to-day delivery of operations across the Upper Wharfedale estate. You will build and manage work programmes. You will support your team in undertaking engagement, maintenance and conservation work. You will develop and deliver small projects and plan for the use of volunteers to increase our capacity, working safely and effectively. Your enthusiasm will inspire others to love this beautiful place as much as you do. Working with others, you will be able to share your work to a wide range of audiences, ensuring special places like these are both protected and enjoyed by everyone for ever. You will work closely with the Heart of the Dales Landscape Recovery team to provide skills, local knowledge and expertise in delivering for major nature and landscape conservation outcomes projected over the coming years. Who we're looking for We’d love to hear from you if you’re: experienced in managing land, nature conservation and access for people, including running small projects and supervising contractors used to developing and running programmes of work to achieve specific goals in conservation or access a strong team player, with a track record in leading and managing staff and volunteers practical and skilled in looking after a range of habitats and landscapes, with certificates in chainsaw use, tractor driving and towing trailers able to work safely, and take the lead on compliance – including writing risk assessments, and safety and environmental procedures happy to talk – with enthusiasm and commitment – to all kinds of people about the work you do and why it matters a driver, with a full UK licence.
