PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
Join DevX and Tooling in Engineering Enablement. As Software Engineering Team Lead, you will run the Developer Experience measurement framework, baseline and publish trends, and lead the tooling, templates and paved roads that move those measures. Your work will reduce friction, strengthen Secure SDLC, and help teams ship faster with less toil.
WHY JOIN THE TEAM
Work where craft meets impact. In DevX and Tooling you'll shape the developer journey at BBC scale, not via policy but by shipping tools people love. Expect autonomy, tight feedback loops and supportive peers. You'll lead hands-on, coach engineers, and partner widely to reduce friction. We value clear thinking, secure defaults and evidence over hype. Your work will be visible, measurable and used daily across the BBC.
YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT
•
Run the Developer Experience measurement framework - baseline, publish trends and turn insights into a prioritised roadmap.
•
Lead the design and delivery of tooling, templates and paved roads that cut friction and improve flow.
•
Embed Secure SDLC into everyday workflows - practical guardrails for code, dependencies, pipelines and secrets.
•
Operate DevX services to clear SLOs - monitor, handle incidents and drive reliability while reducing toil.
•
Partner with Enablement and Product teams to drive adoption and retire redundant tools.
•
Lead and grow the DevX and Tooling team - hiring, coaching and an inclusive, learning culture.
•
Manage vendors and costs - evaluate options, optimise licences and compute, and track value and sustainability.
YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
•
Proven leadership delivering and operating developer tooling at scale - paved roads/templates adopted widely, with SLOs met.
•
Deep SDLC and Secure SDLC expertise - practical guardrails across code, dependencies, pipelines and secrets; strong security judgement.
•
Strong engineering in at least two of Node.js, Python, Java - able to set standards and review across all three.
•
CI/CD and Infrastructure as Code proficiency - Git workflows, pipeline-as-code, Terraform/CloudFormation, robust testing and promotion strategies.
•
Leadership of Developer Experience - design and run a measurement framework (e.g. DORA/SPACE), baseline and publish trends, clear communicator and influencer.
DESIRED BUT NOT REQUIRED
•
Experience with developer portals and inner-source contribution models.
•
Track record introducing AI-assisted development safely within enterprise guardrails.
•
Vendor and cost management, including licence optimisation and sustainability reporting.
•
Experience running champions programmes and communities of practice to drive adoption.
•
Strong AWS literacy and platform fundamentals (networking, DNS, observability).
If you can bring some of these skills and experience, along with transferable strengths, we'd love to hear from you and encourage you to apply.
Before your start date, you may need to disclose any unspent convictions or police charges, in line with our Contracts of Employment policy. This allows us to discuss any support you may need and assess any risks. Failure to disclose may result in the withdrawal of your offer .
