Transfusion Practitioner
to join our team at
Wexham Park Hospital
, part of Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS). This is an exciting opportunity to make a real impact on patient safety and care by supporting the safe, appropriate, and cost-effective use of blood and blood components across our Trusts.
As a Transfusion Practitioner, You Will
* Provide expert advice and guidance on all aspects of transfusion practice
* Support clinical teams to ensure compliance with national standards, guidelines, and legislation.
* Deliver education and training to healthcare professionals to promote safe transfusion practice.
* Monitor and review transfusion incidents and contribute to the development of service improvements.
* Work collaboratively across the BSPS network, with occasional cross-site cover as required.
Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS) is a contractual joint venture between the pathology departments at Ashford & St Peters, Frimley Health (Frimley Park and Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospitals), Royal Berkshire, Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trusts and Surrey and Sussex Healthcare.

Main duties of the job
* The Transfusion Practitioner (TP) team works closely with the Lead Biomedical Scientist in charge of the Blood Transfusion Laboratories to provide a safe, effective and efficient transfusion service and to minimise wastage and misuse. A primary function of the role will be to influence clinical staff in adopting best practice in line with national guidelines.
* The post holder will act as the link between the Blood Transfusion departments and the service users. The TP will provide an advanced level of clinical practice, leadership and development within the specialist field of Transfusion Medicine
* To be the primary trainer/assessor with respect to blood transfusion processes within the Trusts and the community served.
* The TP will assist with the review and management of transfusion policy and guidelines and auditing practice against these standards
* The TP will be responsible for investigation of incidents involving blood components and products contributing to root cause investigation and consideration of human factors.
* The TP will be responsible for collating statistics on blood traceability to fulfil the MHRA requirements.
* To have made an effective contribution to reaching the Trusts vision, strategic objectives and key work programmes.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
* NMC or HCPC registration
* Educated to degree level or recent study at this level and/ beyond.
* Evidence of further professional development to Master's degree level or equivalent experience to this level.
Desirable criteria
* Recognised leadership course
* Teaching/training qualification.
Skills & Knowledge
Essential criteria
* Excellent presentation skills.
* IT literacy including powerpoint
* Excellent written and verbal communication

Experience
Essential criteria
* Significant post-registration experience.
* Up to date experience of Blood Transfusion practices appropriate to an acute DGH.
* Audit and /or research experience.
* Investigation and management of clinical incidents.
* Multi-professional working.
Desirable criteria
* Transfusion Practitioner experience
* Familiarity with Pathology computer systems.
* Experience of Critical Care/Theatre/Haematology/Acute Oncology.
* Project management
* Knowledge of clinical risk management.
