The Role of Mechanical Section Engineer
The role involves meeting all statutory requirements for plant and equipment, allocating necessary engineering resources and materials, and optimising plant availability for production.
It involves developing maintenance and inspection schedules to meet statutory, quality, and engineering requirements, providing technical and engineering expertise to Production Management and Department Engineers, and ensuring compliance with Liberty Speciality Steels Policy and statutory Health, Safety, and Environmental legislation.
The role involves maintaining safety standards and implementing safe working procedures at all levels, reporting accidents and near misses to improve occupational safety. The individual is responsible for monitoring and controlling expenditure on spares, materials, and labour to keep within agreed budgets. They also help in preparing capital and revenue schemes, developing major maintenance proposals and Stop Week schedules, and managing the training and development of mechanical and structural elements of a multidisciplinary engineering team and production personnel.
The individual also liaises with Project Engineers during the design and implementation of capital, revenue, and major maintenance schemes. They negotiate contracts, organise, and control specialist contractors providing maintenance and services, refurbishment, and modifications. They lead investigations, identify root causes, and implement solutions to problems within their area of responsibility.
The individual monitors KPIs for the area of responsibility, identifying deviations from target and implementing corrective action at the appropriate level. They perform the role of Duty Engineer when requested, having sole responsibility for all engineering aspects while following a weekend rota-working pattern.
The individual is responsible for team compliance with requirements regarding thorough/conscientious recording of plant history (Infor) to demonstrate that statutory obligations are being fulfilled and facilitate the process of continuous improvement. They engage in development and failure reduction activities, manage and develop Engineers and Craft teams to satisfy current and long-term business objectives, and address knowledge and skills gaps.
The individual develops and trains Team Leaders and craft to a standard, allowing delegation of responsibilities and cover when necessary. They develop and coordinate daily plans for their area of responsibility, and work towards cost reduction, energy saving, and process improvements within their area.
Required of the Mechanical Section Engineer
The job requires a Mechanical/Machine Engineering Degree or equivalent HND or HNC, strong technical knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems, electrical engineering principals, accounting, stores, purchasing systems, project planning and resource management, and knowledge of Health and Safety legislation in a steelworks environment. The ideal candidate should be an effective man manager with leadership skills, strong drive, motivation, and commitment, good analytical skills, ability to meet deadlines, and familiarity with machinery and bearing fits.
The post holder should be able to read mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic drawings and understand the relevant principals of operation. They should also be familiar with machinery and bearing fits, mechanical drive and gearbox principals, and condition monitoring techniques.
The post holder should manage people effectively to optimise commitment and productivity, working as a team across locations to develop a business approach to dealing with common tasks/problems. They should be sensitivity to external and internal customer needs, aware of the benefits of good customer service, and passionate about pursuing challenging stretch goals.
Problem-solving and decision-making skills include defining problems, systematically gathering and analysing data, identifying cause and effect, and establishing root causes and achievable solutions. The ability to identify and deliver training and development needs for self and subordinates is also essential for business improvement.
