At Credera, we recognise that great talent comes in many forms and welcome conversations about part-time or flexible working arrangements for this role. We are seeking a Director and Software Engineering Capability Lead to join the Technology Practice Leadership team. This role combines the core responsibilities of a Technology Director with accountability for the health, direction, and performance of Credera’s Software Engineering capability. Alongside leading complex client engagements and shaping technology strategy, you will own the internal capability system for Software Engineering - including operating approach, engineering standards, talent systems, and financial performance - ensuring the capability scales sustainably and delivers consistently high-quality outcomes for our clients.
Here’s what you will do
Our Director and Software Engineering Capability Lead is responsible for everything from leading complex consulting engagements for our clients through to owning and evolving Credera’s Software Engineering capability. This includes working with senior client stakeholders to define technology, architecture, and engineering direction; designing and delivering modern software solutions aligned to business outcomes; and leading engineering, architecture, and delivery teams. You will inspire and guide teams while retaining the ability to engage at the lowest level of technical detail where required to ensure quality and successful delivery.
Alongside your client responsibilities, you will lead the evolution of our Software Engineering capability — setting clear operating approaches and engineering standards; and ensuring the ongoing health of the capability across performance, engagement, and financial sustainability. You will guide the transition towards AI-enabled and AI-native software engineering, embedding practical and repeatable approaches into day-to-day delivery, and working closely with other capability leads to drive alignment and shared ways of working across the Technology Practice, leading with clarity, calm judgement, and grounded optimism.
We operate a flexible hybrid working model. This requires 3 days per week working onsite - either at client site (as required) or in your local Credera office (London, Manchester, Leeds or Newcastle). We value collaboration and client impact, so our hybrid model is designed to strike a balance between flexibility, in-person connection, and delivering exceptional outcomes for our clients.
Responsibilities
* Set the strategic direction for the Software Engineering capability across operating approach, talent-system design, recruitment, career frameworks, and engineering standards
* Maintain the operational hygiene of the capability, including performance management, utilisation, and alignment to capability P&L
* Lead the operational and strategic evolution of Software Engineering, ensuring talent is effectively leveraged across client engagements
* Drive the transition towards AI-enabled and AI-native software engineering, embedding practical, safe, and repeatable approaches into day-to-day delivery
* Work closely with other capability leads to achieve alignment, synergy, and the sharing of best practice across the Technology Practice
* Act as an anchor on key client engagements, helping to set technology, architecture, and engineering direction where credibility and judgement are required
* Own capability growth, including hiring, engagement, performance management, and financial performance
* Use your personal network to grow the technology function, as well as create commercial opportunity
* Contribute to the recognition of the Credera brand through publishing viewpoints, presenting at conferences and in webinars, attending industry events and presenting sessions across Credera's client base
* Build Credera's capability in your area of expertise, using your knowledge and connections to identify/recruit great people, attract clients and deepen the firm’s ability to deliver
* Develop and mentor others, act as a line manager for architects and invest in continuing your own professional education
* Act in Credera's best interests and demonstrate the company’s values of: Integrity, Excellence, Tenacity, People First and Humility.
Who you are
* Deep technology expert with current, hands-on engineering experience, operating at the cutting edge of modern software engineering and its application to business problems
* Strong familiarity with advanced software engineering approaches, moving beyond AI-assisted delivery towards end-to-end AI-native and agentic delivery models across the SDLC
* Proven experience of P&L ownership and financial operational leadership, including effective management of risk and issues
* Demonstrated people leadership, spanning engagement, career development, wellbeing, and creating an environment where engineers can do their best work
* Evidence of the ability to operate effectively in ambiguous situations while maintaining optimism, clarity, and momentum, particularly during difficult or uncertain periods
* Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to senior stakeholders and enable meaningful decision-making
* A track record of calm leadership under pressure, high-trust behaviour, ethical judgement, and role-model presence within an organisation
* Consultancy or professional services experience
What You'll Bring
* A system-oriented leadership mindset, able to run software engineering as a coherent capability spanning people, standards, delivery, and performance
* Sound judgement and confidence to make and hold decisions on operating models, standards, and priorities in the best interests of the practice
* The ability to intervene effectively on complex or high-risk engagements when engineering quality or delivery outcomes are at stake
* Commercial awareness that connects capability decisions to utilisation, margin, growth, and sustainability
* Personal resilience and grounded optimism, enabling you to lead with confidence, credibility, and energy through periods of change, ambiguity, and pressure
