Marine HSEQ Manager (Temporary Cover) - Greenock
Location: Greenock, with hybrid working available
Contract: Full‑time, Monday - Friday, office hours
Duration: Starting ASAP, running until at least end of April (potential extension)
About the Role
Our client is seeking an experienced Marine HSEQ Manager to provide temporary cover within their Defence maritime operations. This is a key role supporting safe, compliant, and effective afloat operations under UK maritime regulatory frameworks.
Working closely with Marine and Technical Managers, vessel crews, and wider operational teams, you will provide expert guidance on Health, Safety, Environment and Quality (HSEQ) matters, ensuring compliance with the Merchant Shipping Act, ISM Code, Defence Maritime Regulations (DMR), and other applicable standards. You will also collaborate with the shore‑side HSEQ function to maintain a consistent and integrated approach across the business.
This position is ideal for someone with strong maritime operational awareness and proven HSEQ experience, particularly within regulated marine environments.
Key Responsibilities
* Act as the subject matter expert for afloat HSEQ matters, supporting operational managers and vessel teams.
* Provide HSEQ oversight and assurance across afloat operations, including participation in operational reviews and safety case development.
* Lead or support incident, accident, and near‑miss investigations, ensuring robust root‑cause analysis and corrective actions.
* Maintain audit readiness and support internal/external audits and regulatory engagements.
* Produce accurate HSEQ performance reports, trend analysis, and lessons‑learned outputs.
* Support and deliver HSEQ training for maritime personnel, working with the Marine Trainer where required.
* Build strong working relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders including MOD, MCA, Classification Societies, and industry partners.
* Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, fleet notices, and cross‑port policy alignment.
* Support HSEQ input into contract changes, vessel transitions, and bid activity.
* Promote a proactive safety culture, encouraging hazard identification, transparent reporting, and shared accountability.
* Strong understanding of maritime operations, vessel safety, and UK Flag/Class regulatory frameworks.
* Proven experience in an HSEQ practitioner role within a maritime or similarly regulated environment.
* Ability to analyse HSEQ data, identify trends, and support data‑driven decision‑making.
* Strong problem‑solving capability and familiarity with structured investigation methodologies.
* Excellent communication skills and the ability to engage effectively at all levels.
* Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage workload and prioritise effectively.
* Experience with management systems such as ISO 9001, 45001, 14001 and ISM Code.
Essential Qualifications
* STCW II/2 Chief Mate Unlimited CoC
* Maritime vessel audits and inspections.
* MOD or commercial marine operational experience.
* Environmental reporting and auditing.
* Experience with HAZID, HAZOP, and safety case processes.
* Knowledge of Defence regulatory frameworks.
