The South-East Trunk Road Unit spans 506km through some of the busiest sections of the country, from central Scotland to through the Scottish Borders. Trunk roads in the South East range from the major multi-lane motorways across the central belt to roads through villages in the borders.
The South-East Unit includes 870 bridges and structures including the iconic Queensferry Crossing and Forth Road Bridge, as well as other major bridges such as the Kincardine Bridge and Clackmannanshire Bridge.
About the Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Strategic Road Safety Engineer to join our team in Queensferry on a full-time basis, reporting to the Road Safety Manager.
This role offers a clear progression pathway into a more strategic position. It would suit either:
* An experienced Senior Engineer looking to take ownership of strategic road safety activities, or
* An Engineer ready to step up, with strong technical foundations and a desire to develop into a senior-level role.
We will provide training, mentoring, and ongoing support to help you grow and succeed in the position.
You’ll play a key role in improving safety across some of Scotland’s most important transport infrastructure, contributing to both strategic planning and hands-on delivery of road safety improvements.
Roles and Responsibilities:
* Undertake accident investigation and prevention studies, including appraisal of road safety improvements
* Support the Annual Road Safety Review and development of 1 and 3-year programmes
* Oversee the investigation, design, procurement, delivery, and valuation of road safety works
* Prepare cost estimates, design briefs, and construction documentation, liaising with consultants and contractors
* Act as (or support) Principal Designer in line with CDM 2015 requirements
* Ensure compliance with Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality standards and technical design requirements
* Coordinate the production and management of drawings, documents, and scheme files
* Apply Road Safety Audit processes and the Safe Systems approach across design activities
* Liaise with clients, auditors, and stakeholders, attending internal and external meetings
* Manage workflow between engineering and operational teams
* Ensure environmental compliance, including screening and mitigation measures
* Prepare and submit Departures from Standard where required
* Provide mentoring and support to members of the Road Safety team
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
* Degree in Civil Engineering (Essential)
* IEng Certified, or willing to work towards
* Demonstrable knowledge and experience of Scottish Trunk Road Maintenance Contracts
* Detailed knowledge and experience of DMRB and design processes
* Knowledge and understanding of CDM Regulations 2015
* Understanding of Road Safety Engineering and the Safe Systems Approach
* Completion of RoSPA Road Safety Engineering 10 Day Training (or happy to complete)
* Valid UK Driving Licence is essential
