This role has a starting salary of £33,552 per annum, based on a 36 hour working week.

We are excited to be hiring a new Transport Officer (Infrastructure Inspector) to join our friendly Local Bus Team. This is a permanent full-time role in our Transport & Road Safety Group, reporting to the Local Bus Planning Team Manager. The team are passionate about improving bus services and enhancing the public transport offer for our residents. If you have a proven ability to be part of a dedicated team, along with the ability to work outside we would welcome your application.

Our Offer to You

1. 26 days' holiday, rising to 28 days after 2 years' service and 31 days after 5 years' service (prorated for part time staff)
2. Option to buy up to 10 days of additional annual leave
3. A generous local government salary related pension
4. Up to 5 days of carer's leave and 2 paid volunteering days per year
5. Paternity, adoption and dependents leave
6. An Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) to support health and wellbeing
7. Learning and development hub where you can access a wealth of resources
8. Wellbeing and lifestyle discounts including gym, travel, and shopping
9. A chance to make a real difference to the lives of our residents.

About the Team

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a friendly and supportive team who work to secure the best value public transport available for our residents, keeping them informed of changes to the bus network. Putting buses at the heart of our new and emerging Surrey Transport Plan, the delivery of our Greener Futures Programme, is key to providing a realistic and attractive alternative to the private car. This will help us reduce the carbon emissions that come from the transport sector in the county, forming part of our pathway to net zero carbon.

If you love the idea of supporting the team on ensuring we offer the best outcomes to our residents, we would love to hear from you.

About the Role

Bus Services provide access to key services for our residents, including access to employment, education, health, and essential shopping. This role will be supporting the Team in proactively advising the travelling public of road closures and bus stop suspensions that could affect their journey on the network of local bus services in Surrey. Working with the current three Inspectors, you will assist operators when roads are closed by finding alternative routes, keeping the travelling public updated on emergency service changes, posting timetable information at bus stops and maintaining and clean the bus stop timetable cases and flags. We also have a requirement to spend time monitoring bus services which are financially supported by the County Council and report any irregularities which are observed. Ensuring the best impression of bus services is given to the public is essential and this post works towards this important goal.

The successful post holder will need to work and travel across the County, and a van will be supplied by the Council to be used for work purposes, suitably equipped for the purpose and to be kept at the postholder's home. A laptop and mobile phone will also be provided.

This is a mobile outdoor position, primarily working largely unsupervised on a day-to-day basis, along with our three existing Infrastructure Inspectors. The working week is spent out on the road, in various weathers with office visits (currently in Woking) once a week or as required to collect material to post at the roadside. The work requires a degree of fitness, and training will be arranged for working with ladders and awareness of safety requirements for working on the Highway. This position requires a high degree of self-motivation and organisation, but also working as directed by Senior Inspectors and office-based Transport Officers.

Surrey County Council has embraced agile working, which means that colleagues can work with their managers to agree an appropriate balance of when they work to suit the needs of the team, while giving individuals flexibility. For operational reasons this post is required to operate a regular 6.30am/7am to 2.30pm/3pm 5 days a week, although some flexibility can be given.

Your Application

In order to be considered for shortlisting, your application will clearly evidence the following skills and align with

10. Confident, organised, self-motivated and able to prioritise and plan your own workload in the context of conflicting priorities to meet tight deadlines
11. Knowledge of the county and its public transport networks or have an interest in learning this
12. Customer focused and confident in dealing with and building a rapport with a wide selection of internal and external stakeholders

As part of your application, you will be asked to submit a CV and answer the following questions:

13. Please tell us about your motivations for applying for this role.
14. Please detail your experience in the passenger transport field.
15. How would you ensure the public is kept update on changes to bus services?

Before submitting your application, we recommend you read the job description and our to get an insight into working at Surrey.

Surrey has both urban and rural areas and workers will be expected to have a valid driving licence to drive in the UK and be willing to travel across a wide geographical area. Reasonable adjustments where needed will be made for successful applicants who have a disability or long term health condition to enable them to fulfil the requirements of the job.
