Overview
We are supporting a leading UK engineering organisation operating at the forefront of advanced sensing, navigation and mission-critical systems for defence and maritime platforms. Due to continued growth, they are seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to play a key role across the full systems lifecycle, from concept through to in-service support.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Systems Engineer who enjoys working across multidisciplinary teams and contributing to complex, high-integrity products deployed in demanding operational environments.
The Role
As a Senior Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, integration, verification and delivery of complex electro-mechanical and software-driven systems.
You will:
1. Lead systems engineering activities across the full product lifecycle (concept, development, production and support)
2. Support system architecture definition, requirements capture and decomposition
3. Oversee integration, verification and validation activities
4. Work closely with software, electrical and mechanical engineering teams
5. Contribute to technical proposals, bids and customer documentation
6. Interface directly with customers and external stakeholders
7. Mentor and support junior engineers
8. Deliver engineering work packages to agreed time, cost and quality targets
9. Support external test houses and verification to industry and defence standards
The role is primarily based in North London, with some travel required depending on project needs.
Essential Requirements
10. Degree qualified in Engineering, Mathematics or Physics (or equivalent experience)
11. Proven experience in systems design, integration and test
12. Strong understanding of systems engineering principles and product lifecycles
13. Broad engineering awareness across software, mechanical and electrical disciplines
14. Experience producing high-quality technical documentation, specifications and reports
15. Strong stakeholder communication skills, both internal and external
16. Ability to work autonomously and lead technical activities
17. UK Driving Licence
18. Eligible for UK Security Clearance
Desirable Experience
While not essential, experience in the following areas would be advantageous:
19. Radar, radio or RF-based systems
20. Naval or maritime platform integration
21. Navigation or mission systems
22. Defence or high-integrity regulated environments
23. Communications protocols ( RS232, RS485, TCP/IP, CANBus)
24. External verification to recognised standards (MIL-STD, Def Stan, IEC etc.)
25. EMC, ESD and electronics environments
26. Circuit-level fault finding and use of lab test equipment (oscilloscopes, spectrum analysers, multimeters)
27. Bid proposal compilation
28. Leadership of multi-disciplinary engineering teams
29. Membership of a professional engineering institution (IET, IMechE, INCOSE etc.)
