Role Description
Reporting into the Head of Technical Strategy, the role is responsible for implementing the technical claims motor major loss strategy to optimise customer and business outcomes. The position provides technical leadership to the Motor Major Loss team and colleagues handling high‑value claims, maintaining overall standards consistent with good practice. The role includes substantial financial authority, enabling the lead to advise on the most complex and high‑value claims within the specialism.
The Major Loss Motor Strategy Manager leads a small team of senior specialists who handle a portfolio of the most complex and high‑value claims from notification through to settlement. The role operates in accordance with company and regulatory requirements, delivers high‑standard customer service, controls indemnity spend, and provides support, guidance and training to less experienced handlers. It also serves as senior technical referral for claims within appropriate financial authority.
Responsibilities include collaborating on technical training and development for claims experts, working with wider claims teams to share knowledge, providing technical leadership to the wider business and supporting customer claim reviews, tenders, and broker presentations on technical matters. The role requires close collaboration with actuarial, underwriting and pricing teams, and liaison with reinsurers and other major loss areas such as Property and Casualty.
Location
This is a location‑agnostic role with a preference for working from Manchester or London offices. The role is hybrid, with an expectation of attending an office two days per week.
Salary Information
Pay: £80k – £94k per year, depending on experience. Pay is based on relevant experience, skills, and location. Salary is only one part of the total reward package.
About You
* Supporting the Head of Technical Strategy with the development and implementation of technical claims strategy
* Ownership for implementation of the strategy across claims teams
* Collaborate with stakeholders to optimise strategy execution and benefits
* Act as senior oversight point for technical referrals in line with the Financial Authorities framework
* Collaborate with stakeholders to optimise visibility of performance
* Work in partnership with Fraud strategy to optimise spend and savings
* Act as the Line of Business technical lead for supplier performance and procurement
* Act as the Line of Business lead for development/execution of Claims Standards
* Act as the Line of Business technical SME for analytics and machine‑learning development
* Deputise for the Head of Technical Strategy at strategic meetings
* Owner of specific LoB skills matrices
* Lead, inspire and develop a small team of Technical Strategy Specialists handling major and complex losses
* Expert in area of specialism with full understanding of how claims impact on the P&L
* Monitor and develop technical performance of teams within disciplines
* Oversee direction of the largest and most complex claims
* Ensure claims recovery practices meet internal standards, coordinate with legal providers, and recommend process improvements to reduce risk and error
* Participate in division relationship with Allianz SE Munich on claims matters
* Own and drive delivery of strategic projects and priorities within team and business
* Identify trends, risks and opportunities, recommending improvements to senior leadership team
* Support business propositions through customer/broker claim reviews, tenders, and forum presentations
* Promote and maintain relationships with Actuaries, Underwriting divisions and intermediaries on claims matters
* Build and maintain strong links with industry counterparts, lead ABI and other industry forum meetings
* Oversee selection and performance of professional service providers in specialism
* Support business with all aspects of re‑insurance that impact Motor Major Loss claims
* Liaise and advise Pricing and underwriting teams, working alongside actuarial colleagues
Essential Skills
* Excellent leadership experience focused on performance, development, engagement, and coaching
* Proven operational management in fast‑paced, regulated environments
* Excellent stakeholder management, negotiation and industry engagement including committees
* Excellent technical expertise in relevant LoB (e.g., motor, casualty, property)
* Experience using data to drive performance improvement and decision‑making
* Track record of leading change, training and continuous improvement initiatives
* Confident communication and presentation skills, including public speaking
* Experience collaborating with supply chains to deliver improvements
* Market‑leading technical expertise in the field of specialism, including case law and regulatory/consumer duty knowledge
* Excellent understanding of customer needs, business operations and market dynamics
* Extensive knowledge of claims standards and guidance
* Analytical and problem‑solving mindset, able to identify trends and think creatively
* Confident decision‑maker with accountability for outcomes
