Job Summary

The Senior Healthcare Support Worker will assist the Registered Nurse in delivering safe, high quality clinical care to patients at all times. The role works under direct and indirect supervision of the Registered Nurse and receives appropriate training in the clinical setting. Once trained and deemed competent, the post holder will undertake clinical tasks and duties within the scope of this job description.

They work collaboratively within the clinical area to meet the needs of patients and their families, following group policies and procedures.


Responsibilities

* Maintain the highest possible standards of compassionate and professional patient‑centred care with particular attention to privacy and dignity.
* Assist patients with personal care, hygiene and sanitary needs, ensuring privacy and dignity is maintained at all times.
* Assist in meeting patients’ nutritional needs, including non‑oral nutritional and fluid intake. Ensure that patients who require assistance at mealtimes have an appropriately coloured tray to identify they need help and are assisted with eating and drinking.
* Document food and fluid intake and output accurately on appropriate patient charts.
* Assist in skin and pressure area care to prevent pressure ulcers developing, and under the supervision of registered nurses help patients to move position to prevent discomfort and/or pressure ulcers.
* Assist patients with safe mobilisation according to their plan of care and, where appropriate, seek help from other multidisciplinary team members.
* Utilise appropriate moving and handling equipment to reduce risk of injury to the patient and to self.
* Assist in supporting rehabilitation and therapeutic activities for patients as appropriate.
* Assist registered nursing staff in taking and recording vital signs as per the patient’s plan of care.
* Communicate any changes in the patient’s condition to the nurse / midwife in charge.

Person Specification


Essential

* Basic literacy and numeracy skills.
* An NVQ/QCF Level 2 Diploma in Clinical Healthcare Support or a commitment to undertake and successfully complete the available training and education within an agreed timeframe.
* Level 2 in English and Mathematics or equivalent.
* Understanding of the needs of patients in a care setting.
* Sound understanding of the need for confidentiality.


Desirable

* IT skills.
* Some recent study.
* 2 years experience of working in a care setting or transferable skills, demonstrable keenness and passion for the role.
