The Royal Marsden Hospital (NHS Foundation Trust) Band 7 Specialist Biomedical Scientist - Histopathology We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic band 7 Biomedical Scientist to join our team within this busy laboratory. Applicants must be HCPC registered. The successful candidate will require significant experience in all aspects of histopathology. This role has a focus on developing the CPGC processes in the department and being trained in tumour assessment.
Experience in implementing and maintaining quality management as per national accreditation standards is essential. The department is in the process of implementing digital pathology, experience would be an advantage.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be an experienced HCPC registered specialist biomedical scientist providing scientific services to patients, with extensive knowledge in histopathology and preparation material for clinical genomic testing.
The post holder will be responsible for the day to day technical and operational management of the CPGC service within the department, maintaining high levels of accuracy and reliability, ensuring continuity of service at all times, in conjunction with other section leaders in the department, to achieve the maximum efficiency and quality of the service provided. The post holder will also support tumour assessment for histopathology samples requiring clinical genomics testing and provide advice on a range of technical issues.
The post holder will be expected to take full participation in laboratory accreditation to ensure ongoing compliance with ISO 15189 and liaise with staff in different departments throughout pathology and the Trust.
The post holder will be expected to assist the laboratory management team implementing new techniques and technologies whilst maintaining a full diagnostic service.

Day to day planning and co-ordination, including scheduling, workload distribution and ensuring smooth operation of the CPGC service, and when necessary, the core haematopathology service. Including management of staff, equipment and the quality system.
Supporting assessment of tumour samples to determine suitability for clinical genomics testing.
Maintaining up to date knowledge of all instrumentation and being the lead trouble shooter for equipment and diagnostic techniques.
Maintaining high levels of accuracy in a clinical setting where patient results directly impact treatment decisions.

Specific Experience
Essential criteria
20. Degree in biomedical science
21. HCPC registration
22. Evidence of post registration study
23. Higher degree or equivalent (e.g. PGCert)
24. Experience of working in all areas of relevant routine laboratory
25. Proven experience writing/ reviewing SOPs and documents
26. Able to perform advance training
27. Full understanding of all laboratory H&S procedures
28. Able to foster a culture of H&S and ensure team compliance with Trust and local H&S procedures

30. Proven ability to organise a team work plans, schedules and deadlines
31. Full understanding of EQA & IQA and their implications

Flu Vaccination – What We Expect of our Staff
At The Royal Marsden we have an immune compromised patient population who we must protect as much as we can against the flu virus. Each year, seasonal flu affects thousands of people in the UK. Occurring mainly in winter, it is an infectious respiratory disease capable of producing symptoms ranging from those similar to a common cold, through to very severe or even fatal disease.
The wellbeing of our staff and patients is of the upmost importance to us, and it is the expectation of The Royal Marsden that all patient-facing staff have an annual flu vaccination, provided free of charge by the Trust.
