At GM Performance Power Units (GM PPU), were pushing the limits of motorsport innovation. As an ES (Energy Store) Thermal Engineer, youll be instrumental in optimizing energy storage systems, driving our competitive edge on the track. You’ll design and develop advanced cooling approaches to ensure our high-performance ES battery system delivers the power needed to stay ahead of the competition.


Key Responsibilities:

• Utilize your expertise in battery chemistry thermal performance and limitations to optimize energy storage system cooling strategies.

• Collaborate with Battery Management System (BMS) engineers to develop control strategies that maximize performance without compromising battery life.

• Design and optimize thermal management systems for high-power, high-density ES units and associated components, such as DC-DC converters.

• Conduct advanced thermal simulations using tools like Simcenter STAR-CCM+ and Abaqus to predict and enhance system performance.

• Analyze telemetry data to assess thermal behavior and identify areas for improvement in ES thermal efficiency.

• Ensure compliance with FIA regulations while maximizing the reliability and performance of ES systems.

• Research and implement innovative cooling technologies such as advanced heat sink materials/designs, forced air cooling, liquid cooling, or immersive cooling.

• Work closely with cross-functional teams to integrate thermal solutions seamlessly into the power unit architecture.

• Validate designs through rigorous bench and track testing in collaboration with manufacturing and testing teams.


Qualifications:

• Master’s or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Thermal Engineering, or a related field; OR

• Bachelor’s degree with 5+ years of experience in thermal management for high-performance energy storage systems.

• Strong expertise in battery chemistry thermal characteristics and their impact on performance.

• Proficiency in advanced simulation tools such as Simcenter STAR-CCM+, Abaqus, or similar platforms for CFD and thermal analysis.

• In-depth knowledge of heat transfer principles, cooling system design, and high-performance materials for extreme environments.

• Familiarity with Formula 1 technical regulations, particularly regarding energy storage systems.


Desirable Skills:

• Experience with advanced cooling techniques for compact, high-power-density applications.

• Knowledge of additive manufacturing techniques for thermal component design.

• Familiarity with integrating cooling systems into hybrid architectures involving multiple power modules.
