The School and Role
Do you enjoy working with young children and helping them develop confidence and independence?
Are you passionate about supporting pupils with additional needs in their early learning years?
Are you looking for a rewarding role within a nurturing primary school environment?
This role is for a Primary SEND Teaching Assistant to support children aged 4–11 years with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and a range of communication and interaction needs. All pupils have an Educational Health Care Plan (EHCP) and require tailored support to access learning. This ‘Outstanding’ SEND Autism school, based in Ashington, is seeking a patient, enthusiastic and compassionate Teaching Assistant to join their team on a full-time basis.
As a Primary SEND Teaching Assistant within this specialist school, you will be working in small classes alongside experienced teachers and support staff. You will help deliver personalised learning activities, implement structured routines, and provide 1:1 or small-group support depending on pupil needs. This full-time position is available for an immediate start, is long-term, and could lead to a permanent role for the right person.
The school’s mission is to create a calm, predictable and nurturing learning environment where children with Autism can develop communication skills, emotional regulation, social understanding and independence. Many pupils have experienced difficulties or disrupted education before joining the school. Therefore, establishing positive relationships, building trust, and creating a sense of safety and consistency is essential. The Teaching Assistant will play a key role in supporting pupils to overcome barriers to learning, encouraging them to take pride in their achievements and develop the foundational skills needed for future success.
The Ideal Primary SEND Teaching Assistant Will Be:
1. Patient, caring, and enthusiastic about working with young children
2. Experienced in supporting pupils with SEND in a primary setting
3. Confident supporting learning, play-based activities, and routines
4. Able to build strong, trusting relationships with pupils and staff
5. Adaptable, resilient, and positive in a busy classroom environment
Experience in education, childcare, or SEND support is highly valued, but a nurturing attitude and willingness to learn are just as important. A DBS on the Update Service is required (or willingness to apply).
