Derby
East Midlands Trains
Logistics manager
Posted: 12 September
Offer description

We are proud to be One Team at East Midlands Railway (EMR). We are passionate about keeping people safe, delighting our customers, doing the right thing, and putting customers at the heart of our sustainable railway for the East Midlands.

With over 2,600 employees, our people are the reason we are so successful. Nine times accredited as a Top Employer, we value our people and are dedicated to making sure that everybody feels empowered to bring their authentic self to work.

At EMR we want to proactively embrace diversity across our workforce and recognise that we are under-represented in terms of females and ethnic minority groups. We’re therefore taking positive steps to promote a positive and inclusive culture; we welcome applications from those that identify with these groups to better represent our communities.

We have an exciting opportunity to join #TeamEMR as a Materials and Logistics Manager.

In this role, you’ll manage materials locations at Etches Park Depot and Eastcroft Depot, ensuring the timely availability of parts to support rolling stock maintenance and production. You will oversee a safe, compliant, and professionally operated stores facility, maintaining the highest operational standards while fostering a culture of continuous improvement and service excellence.

Using LEAN manufacturing principles, you’ll implement and maintain efficient warehousing and lineside two-bin systems to optimise material flow, support production reliability, and enhance overall efficiency.

Your key responsibilities include:

1. Leadership & Team Management: Provide strategic leadership and operational support to Stores teams at Etches Park and Eastcroft, ensuring safe, compliant, and efficient service delivery. Oversee personnel management, training, competency, and adherence to HR policies, while acting as deputy for the Stores Team Leader when required.

2. Compliance & Process Oversight: Drive continuous improvement in purchasing, inventory, and fuel management processes. Ensure all facilities maintain high standards of safety, cleanliness, and regulatory compliance, with robust systems for tracking and accountability of materials.

3. Supplier & Contract Management: Collaborate with the Supply Chain Manager to manage supplier relationships, ensure contractual compliance, and identify opportunities for sourcing efficiency, availability, and resilience. Oversee fuel provision and supplier performance across the EMR estate.

4. Inventory & Asset Control: Conduct stocktakes, audits, and inventory checks to maintain accurate records and optimal material availability. Manage third-party spares, vehicle repair materials, and depot outstation stock to prevent service disruptions. Forecast and plan for future material needs in alignment with production schedules.

5. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with Planning, Production, Commercial, Technical, Finance, and Procurement teams to ensure material availability aligns with operational priorities, maintenance schedules, budgets, and regulatory requirements.

6. Systems & Financial Control: Maintain accurate data in the Fleet Management System (FMS) and generate reports to support planning, operational oversight, and KPI monitoring. Use insights to drive continuous improvement, efficiency, and alignment with business objectives.

What we are looking for:

7. Qualified to HNC/Degree level or CIPS equivalent
8. Proficient in Microsoft Office
9. Proven leadership and people management skills
10. Excellent presentation and communication skills
11. Strong experience collaborating with internal teams and suppliers
12. Skilled in business and supplier relationship management
13. Strong understanding and application of LEAN principles

As well as a competitive salary, we’ll also offer you:

14. An excellent defined benefit pension scheme
15. 32 days’ holiday per year; increasing to 34 days after 2 years
16. Free First-Class duty travel on the EMR network
17. Free standard leisure travel on the EMR network and Train Operating Companies under Transport UK & LNER
18. 75% discount on national leisure travel (inc partner and dependants)
19. Friends and Family discounted tickets on the EMR network
20. Various training opportunities
21. Employee benefits portal with access to generous discounts, Cycle 2 Work Scheme …and many more!
