What will you be doing?

You’ll help keep our nation moving every day. A key part of the work is the daily upkeep of the rail network. As an operative you’ll work outdoors in a small team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users. The role involves demanding manual work, often with the need to transport kit, across varied terrain. You will work outside in all conditions, day or night, next to moving trains. Safety, adherence to rules, and teamwork are critical.

About the role (External)

Operatives can specialise in a range of disciplines; for this role you’ll become a specialist in Track Maintenance. You’ll be involved in demanding manual work, often with the need to transport kit, across tricky terrain, outdoors in all conditions.

You’ll be the one who shows up prepared, checks equipment, and supports the team from site to site. You’ll help maintain equipment and provide lookout duties to keep everyone safe.

Your Skills Matter

Transferable skills are valued. You don’t necessarily need rail experience, but you should show how your skills meet these requirements:

* Team-working: collaborate with the team to deliver safe and efficient work.
* Communication: good communication skills to work safely and effectively.
* Proactive planning: punctuality, ready van and equipment, anticipate team needs.
* Working under pressure: remain calm outdoors with trains passing nearby.
* Following rules and instructions: respect rules and speak up if unsafe.
* Willingness to learn: continuously develop skills and stay current with standards and procedures.

* Shifts: Operative roles involve a changing shift pattern including days, nights, and weekends.
* Outdoor working: comfortable working in different weather conditions.
* Safe working: offers of employment are subject to drug and alcohol testing and pre-employment checks (medical assessment and BPSS). This will include hearing and eyesight examinations.
* Driving: you’ll need a driving licence (category B) to drive Network Rail vehicles.
* Commute: you should live within a 60-minute commute of the location.
